When a shop calls us about oil showing up under a lift, the first thing we do is start a proper hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis instead of just guessing at a seal kit. Start With Where the Oil Actually Shows Up

The very first step in any hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis is figuring out exactly where the oil is coming from, not just where it ends up. Oil pools on the shop floor after running down the outside of the cylinder barrel, the base of the piston rod, or a hose fitting, so tracing it upward matters more than staring at the puddle. We wipe everything down completely, cycle the lift a few times, and then look again with a flashlight to see where fresh fluid reappears first.

This step alone saves a lot of wasted labor. We’ve had customers convinced their cylinder seal was shot when the real leak was a loose banjo fitting two feet above it, with oil running down the cylinder body and dripping off the bottom. Wiping clean and re-checking after a few cycles is the cheapest, fastest diagnostic tool we have, and it’s the one step shops skip most often when they try to fix things themselves before calling us.

Check the Rod Seal and Wiper First

Once we know the leak originates at the cylinder itself, the rod seal and wiper are usually the first suspects in a hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis. A thin film of oil on the exposed rod, especially right after the lift lowers, points to a worn rod seal letting fluid past on the return stroke. If there’s also grit or debris embedded in that oil film, the wiper seal has likely failed and is letting contamination into the bore, which accelerates wear on everything downstream.

We run a finger along the rod surface (with the lift lowered and power locked out) to feel for pitting, scoring, or rust. Any of those marks mean the seal is being cut every time the rod travels, and no amount of new seals will stop the leak until the rod itself is addressed or the cylinder is replaced. This is one of the most common findings we see on lifts that have been in service for many years, especially in shops that run through a lot of road salt and grime during Iowa winters.

Inspect the Barrel for Scoring or Pitting

A cylinder barrel with internal scoring is a much bigger problem than a bad seal, and separating the two is central to any accurate hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis. Scoring usually comes from contaminated fluid, a failed wiper letting debris in, or years of use without fluid changes. Once the bore surface is damaged, a new seal kit will leak again within weeks because it’s riding over grooves instead of a smooth wall.

We check this by fully extending the rod and looking for consistent witness marks or by feeling for rough spots as the rod travels. If the barrel is scored, we’re honest with customers about it — a reseal is a temporary fix at best, and the cylinder usually needs to be rebuilt with a sleeve or replaced outright. Look at Fittings, Hoses, and the Manifold Block

Not every leak traced back to a cylinder area is actually the cylinder. Fittings, hose connections, and manifold blocks sit right next to the barrel and are a frequent source of leaks that get misdiagnosed. We check every fitting for proper torque, look for cracked or swollen hose ends, and inspect O-rings at the manifold for hardening or flattening, since rubber degrades over time even without visible damage.

On two-post and four-post lifts, we also check whether a fitting was ever over-tightened during a prior repair, which can distort the seat and cause a slow weep that looks like it’s coming from the cylinder body a few inches below. Isolating these external sources before opening up the cylinder itself can save a shop from an unnecessary teardown, and it’s a step we never skip when we’re called out for a leak complaint.

Test Under Load, Not Just at Rest

A cylinder can look perfectly dry sitting at rest and still leak significantly under load, which is why static inspection alone isn’t a complete hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis. We load the lift to a realistic working weight, run it through a full cycle, and hold it at height to watch for drift and seepage that only shows up under pressure. Internal bypass leaks especially only reveal themselves this way, since a worn piston seal can hold static pressure but let fluid slip past once the system is working.

We also time how long it takes the lift to drift down from full height under load. A slow, steady drop over several minutes usually points to internal bypass rather than an external leak, and that distinction changes the entire repair plan. Skipping this load test is one of the fastest ways to misdiagnose a cylinder problem and replace parts that weren’t actually the issue.

Consider the Fluid Itself

Fluid condition is an underrated part of hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis. Old, contaminated, or wrong-viscosity fluid accelerates seal wear and can cause seals to swell or shrink in ways that create leaks even when the hardware is otherwise fine. We pull a sample and check for cloudiness, metal particles, or a burnt smell, all of which point to fluid that’s been doing damage for a while before the leak ever showed up.

If the fluid looks bad, we recommend a full flush alongside any seal or cylinder work, because putting new seals into contaminated oil just restarts the same failure cycle. This is a step that’s easy to overlook when everyone’s focused on the visible leak, but it’s often the difference between a repair that lasts years and one that fails again within a few months.

When to Repair vs. Replace the Cylinder

After completing a full hydraulic cylinder leaking diagnosis, the last decision is whether to reseal, rebuild, or replace. Minor rod seal wear with a clean barrel is usually worth resealing. Scoring, pitting, or a bent rod usually means rebuild or replacement is the better long-term call, even though it costs more upfront, because a patched-up damaged cylinder tends to fail again fast.
