What Actually Happens During a Rebuild
Every hydraulic cylinder rebuild lift technicians perform starts with pulling the cylinder out completely, which usually means dropping the lift arms, disconnecting hydraulic lines, and getting the barrel onto a bench where it can actually be inspected. Once it’s out, we disassemble the rod, gland, and piston, then clean everything and inspect the bore for scoring, pitting, or rust damage. If the bore is in reasonable shape, a fresh seal kit, new wiper, and sometimes a new rod go back in, and the cylinder gets pressure tested before it goes back on the lift.
The seals are almost always the actual failure point, not the steel itself. Years of dirt, moisture, and mineral-heavy hydraulic fluid chew through rubber and polyurethane seals long before the barrel wears out structurally. When the Bore Is Too Far Gone
Not every cylinder is a good rebuild candidate. A pitted bore will just chew through new seals again within months, and a bent rod puts uneven side-load on the seals every single cycle. In those cases we’re honest with the shop: this cylinder needs to be replaced, not rebuilt, and trying to save it will just mean paying for the rebuild twice.
Honing can sometimes save a bore with light surface corrosion, restoring a smooth wall the new seals can actually seat against. But honing removes material, and a bore that’s already been honed once or twice may not have enough wall thickness left to safely hone again. This is where experience matters — we’ve seen shops try to stretch one more rebuild out of a cylinder that really needed to be retired, and it cost them a comebacks and downtime that would have been avoided by just replacing it the first time.
Signs Your Lift Cylinder Needs Attention
The most common warning sign is drift — a vehicle sitting up on the lift slowly loses height over minutes or overnight. That’s fluid bypassing worn seals internally, and it’s the textbook case for a rebuild. External leaks around the rod or base fittings are the second most common complaint, showing up as oil spots on the shop floor under the lift. A lift that groans, chatters, or hesitates partway through its travel can point to air in the system from a failing seal, or in worse cases, scoring inside the barrel itself.

DIY Rebuild vs Calling a Professional
Some shop owners with a mechanical background and the right bench setup can handle a straightforward hydraulic cylinder rebuild lift project themselves, especially on smaller cylinders with accessible seal kits. But there are real risks: reassembling a cylinder with a nicked seal, cross-threaded gland, or misaligned rod can cause a failure under load, and that’s not a mistake anyone wants happening with a vehicle in the air. Pressure testing after reassembly is not optional — it’s the step that confirms the rebuild actually holds before it goes back into daily service.
For inground cylinders, larger commercial bores, or anything where the lift’s rated capacity is high, we generally recommend having a technician handle it, or at minimum having one inspect the bore before reassembly.
