Pulling a cylinder out of a two-post column means unloading the lift, relieving pressure, disconnecting and capping lines, dealing with cables or chains that route around the cylinder, and getting a heavy component out of a tight space without damaging the carriage. Once it’s on the bench, the gland nut usually fights you. Decades of torque, corrosion, and thread locker mean spanner wrenches, heat, and occasionally a machine shop. Safety is not a tiebreaker — it’s the first filter
An automotive lift holds several tons over a person’s head. That changes the calculus in a way it wouldn’t on a log splitter or a dump trailer. If there’s any question about the structural integrity of a barrel — corrosion pitting, a suspect weld, a repair someone already attempted with a hose clamp and RTV — we replace it. ANSI/ALI standards and the manufacturer’s service manual both matter here.
