What Hydraulic Cylinder Seals Actually Do

Every hydraulic lift cylinder relies on a set of seals to keep pressurized fluid on one side of the piston and prevent it from bypassing to the other side or leaking out entirely. There are usually several types working together inside one cylinder: a piston seal, a rod seal, wiper seals to keep debris out, and O-rings or backup rings at the fittings and end caps. Each one has a specific job, and if even one fails, the whole system loses its ability to hold pressure.

On automotive lifts, this matters more than people realize because the cylinder is doing constant work under load — supporting a vehicle for minutes or hours at a time, sometimes at full extension. Rod seals in particular take a beating because they’re wiping against a moving shaft every single cycle. Once the rubber or polyurethane compound in these hydraulic cylinder seals hardens, cracks, or wears thin, fluid starts finding a way past them. That’s when you see the drip on the shop floor, or worse, a lift that slowly settles overnight because fluid is bypassing internally where you can’t even see it.

Common Signs Your Cylinder Seals Are Failing

The most obvious sign is visible fluid on or around the cylinder body, especially near the rod where it exits the housing. But not every seal failure shows up as a puddle. Internal bypass — where fluid leaks past the piston seal inside the cylinder rather than out to the floor — often shows up as “lift drift,” where a car lift slowly loses height over several hours even though nothing looks wet. If you’re chasing a mystery drift complaint and the cylinder looks dry on the outside, don’t rule out the seals just because there’s no visible leak.

Other tells include jerky or uneven movement as the lift rises, a spongy feel when it should be firm, or a noticeable drop in lifting power on lifts with dual cylinders where one side sags faster than the other. We’ve also seen worn hydraulic cylinder seals let in contaminants past a failed wiper seal, which accelerates wear on the cylinder bore itself and turns a simple seal job into a bore-honing or full cylinder replacement job if it sits too long. Catching the problem early, while it’s still just the seals, is almost always the cheaper outcome.

Why Seals Wear Out Faster Than You’d Expect

Heat, contamination, and age are the three big enemies of any seal material. Hydraulic fluid that’s gone too long without being changed picks up moisture and grit, and that abrasive mix chews away at seal surfaces every time the cylinder cycles. Shops that skip fluid changes for years are almost guaranteed to see premature seal failure, regardless of how good the original equipment was.

Temperature swings do their own damage, especially in Iowa where a shop can be well below freezing in January and humid and warm by July. Rubber compounds expand and contract with those swings, and over enough cycles that stress causes micro-cracking that eventually turns into a full leak path. Storage conditions matter too — a lift that sits unused for a long stretch, especially outdoors or in an unheated building, can develop seal issues faster than one that’s used daily, because seals that stay compressed in one position for months lose some of their elasticity. Seal Kit Repair vs. Full Cylinder Replacement

In most cases, a worn cylinder doesn’t need to be replaced outright — it needs a rebuild with a proper seal kit matched to that specific bore size and cylinder design. What a Professional Seal Replacement Looks Like

A proper seal job starts with fully depressurizing and draining the cylinder, then removing it from the lift structure so it can be disassembled cleanly. We inspect the rod for scoring, check the bore for wear patterns, and clean every surface before new hydraulic cylinder seals go in.
