Step Two: Two-Post vs Four-Post for Restoration Work

Restoration work has a specific mix of tasks. You’re doing floor pan replacement, frame rail work, welding-in patch panels, painting undersides, and yes — tire rotations and wheel work when the finished car goes out. Two-post and four-post lifts handle these differently.

A two-post lift is better for undercar restoration access. The wheels hang, the frame is fully exposed underneath, and you can weld and paint the entire underbody without runway interference. A four-post is better for tire rotation and wheel work — the vehicle sits flat on runways, wheels come off cleanly, and rolling jacks let you droop the wheels when you need to. For a restoration shop doing predominantly undercar work, the two-post is the workhorse. For a shop that also does regular tire and wheel service on finished cars, the four-post earns its footprint. Our decision framework is simple: pick a brand with a real domestic parts pipeline that will deliver replacement components to you within a week 15 years from now. Everything else is secondary.

Still, our default advice is to buy new for the primary lift.

The reason is that a primary lift in a restoration shop takes daily hard use. It’s up and down 20+ times a day, it’s got heavy vehicles on it (a full-frame ’60s car with steel body panels is a real load), and it needs the safety systems working perfectly every single time. Used equipment can meet that bar if the history is documented and the inspection passes, but the tail risk of a hidden issue is real. For a secondary or project-car lift, used equipment is a totally reasonable choice. Just apply the same inspection standard: ALI-listed model, cylinder rod condition, cam engagement, arm restraint quality, fluid clarity.
