Collectors care about the vehicles more than most, and they want the lift decision to reflect that care. The Waukee collector’s garage — starting conditions

The Waukee garage we walked through last summer was a purpose-built three-car detached structure with 11-foot ceilings, a freshly-poured slab, and enough electrical service to support anything we’d want to install. Those are dream starting conditions for a hydraulic lift automotive install, and they let us skip the usual constraints conversation. The collector had eight cars in rotation — five in the collection, three daily drivers between family members — and wanted the ability to store some, service some, and stack one over another when the garage got full during Iowa winters.

The initial ask was for a two-post to service everything, which we pushed back on. Storage was clearly the higher-value use case for the collection cars, and the collector had access to a friend’s shop for the daily driver service work anyway. That reframe changed the whole decision. Instead of a two-post, we ended up on a four-post drive-on with rolling jacks — storage-first, service-capable, and configured with the extra reach and ramp options a collector actually uses. That reframe is why we ask about the total vehicle picture before we spec anything. The lift the customer thinks they want isn’t always the lift the collection needs over the long haul.

Overhead vs baseplate — the ceiling conversation

The ceiling in the Waukee garage was 11 feet clear at the lowest truss, which sat right on the edge of the overhead vs baseplate hydraulic lift automotive decision. An overhead-shutoff two-post typically needs 12 feet of clearance. A baseplate variant of the same lift, or a four-post drive-on, drops the requirement into the 10-and-change range depending on the model. At 11 feet, we could theoretically fit a shorter-column overhead lift, but the margin was thin enough that any future truss modification or ceiling insulation upgrade might have pushed it out of tolerance.

We went with the four-post specifically because ceiling clearance wasn’t a constraint for it — the vehicle rides on the runways, the total lift envelope stays low, and the collector’s future flexibility was preserved. We noted for the collector that a two-post could still work, but that the ceiling would be doing the choosing. They preferred to keep the ceiling out of the decision, which was the right call. When we walk collectors through this decision, we’re honest about which path preserves more flexibility. Overhead lifts are lower-cost and simpler; baseplate and four-post options cost more but preserve more future options. Waukee’s answer was flexibility, and that answer has held up through the first year without a single second thought.

Choosing four-post vs two-post hydraulic lift automotive

The four-post hydraulic lift automotive we specified for the Waukee collector is a 9,000-pound drive-on with 173-inch runway length and casters for repositioning. Runway length matters for a collector — some of the vintage iron in that garage was long enough that a shorter runway would have overhung the vehicle. The casters let the collector reposition the lift as garage layout evolved, which is a real feature for a collection that grows and shrinks over time. The rolling jacks give the lift service capability for the occasional wheels-off job.

The two-post was still a viable option — a 10,000-pound Rotary SPO10 with a baseplate configuration would have fit under the 11-foot ceiling. But the two-post’s storage capability was zero, whereas the four-post’s storage capability was one full vehicle stacked over another. That single dimension flipped the decision. When storage is on the table, four-post wins in almost every collector conversation we have. When service is the primary use case, two-post wins. Waukee wanted both, and the four-post plus rolling jacks package gave them both — with storage as the primary function and service as the secondary. That was the right split for the actual use pattern of the collection.

Install day

Install day at the Waukee garage ran seven hours from truck arrival to final commissioning signature. The concrete had been core-sampled ahead of time and confirmed at 4-1/4 inches of 3,500-psi mix — well above the four-post minimum. We anchored the four-post columns with wedge anchors torqued to the manufacturer spec, ran the electrical to the pump box on a dedicated 20-amp circuit, and bled the hydraulic system. The lift cycled cleanly through its first ten test cycles with no issues, and we set it down onto the safety cams at three different heights to verify pawl engagement across the full working range.

The collector was on-site for the entire install, which we recommend for every hobbyist and collector customer. Watching the install teaches you where every part lives, how the anchors are set, how the safety cams engage, and what normal sounds like when the lift cycles. When something eventually needs service down the road, the collector will remember what the lift sounded like on day one. That memory is more useful than a service manual. We finished the install with the binder — anchor torques signed, cable tensions measured, commissioning checklist initialed. The collector took the binder home to the office. That was the artifact of the day.

The first state inspection cycle on the lift

Iowa doesn’t require state safety inspections the way some states do, but the Waukee collector treats every collection car to a self-imposed annual inspection modeled on a proper safety check. That inspection cycle was the first real use of the new hydraulic lift automotive, and it happened about six weeks after install. Vehicle one was a mid-’60s convertible with a boxed frame — easy to lift, easy to inspect, no drama. Vehicle two was a lifted pickup with a modified suspension that took more thought on lift-point placement. Vehicle three was a low-slung sports car that required the shortest runway pad configuration and a careful drive-on angle.

Across those three inspections, we got a call from the collector once — the low sports car had a bumper clearance issue on drive-on that we solved with a supplemental ramp accessory. Everything else went smoothly. The inspections themselves — brake pad condition, brake line integrity, exhaust condition, driveline U-joint check, suspension bushing inspection — all happened at a comfortable working height with the vehicle held on the safety cams. The collector’s back thanked them. So did the collector’s spouse, who no longer heard complaints after inspection weekends. That’s the qualitative outcome we hope for on every collector install.

Small adjustments in months two through six

The first six months with a new hydraulic lift automotive always involve small adjustments that don’t show up in the manual. In the Waukee garage, the collector moved the pump box location once — the original position turned out to conflict with a shop stool the collector used often. Easy fix, one hour of relocation work with new hose runs. The collector also added an overhead LED light bar directly over the lift’s working position, because the ambient garage lighting wasn’t strong enough directly under a raised vehicle. Third small change: a rubber floor mat under the pump box to catch the occasional hydraulic drip that inevitably happens over time.

None of those changes were failures. They were the normal shake-out of putting a new tool into a real workspace and finding out what the real workspace actually wanted. We remind every collector that these small adjustments are the norm, not the exception. The goal isn’t a perfect install on day one — it’s an install that’s adjustable enough to become perfect by month six. Our commissioning binder includes a post-install notes section specifically for the customer to jot changes they make, so future owners of the garage (or of the lift) can see the history. Twelve-month lookback

At the twelve-month mark, we visited the Waukee garage for the annual PM check on the hydraulic lift automotive. Cable tensions were within spec — no adjustment needed. Cylinder seals showed no evidence of leakage. Anchor bolts were torque-checked and confirmed at the original spec. The safety cams cycled cleanly at every position. The hydraulic fluid was clear and clean, and we changed it anyway because year-one fluid should be changed as a precaution. Total PM visit was under two hours. The collector was pleased with the lift’s first year and had zero complaints about the equipment itself.

If we’d done anything differently, we might have specified the overhead LED light bar as part of the initial install package rather than letting the collector add it later. That’s a small change but it would have saved a step. Otherwise, the four-post-plus-rolling-jacks decision was correct, the electrical was correctly sized, the anchor placement was solid, and the collector had exactly the storage-and-service capability they’d wanted. Year one told us the spec was right. Years two through twenty should be quiet if the PM cadence continues.
