A farm-shop owner outside Ames called us in April about adding a hydraulic lift automotive that could handle alignment work on the trucks and trailers his customers were dropping off during planting season. He’d never bought a lift before. He had a good building, a Bobcat, a rigger friend across the county, and a genuine unwillingness to buy the wrong thing twice. The question he asked was the one every first-time buyer should ask: what does the pre-purchase checklist actually look like, from a semi rolling up the driveway to the day the first pickup rolls onto the runways? Here’s the checklist we walked him through, item by item, exactly as we use it in the field.

What Alignment Work Actually Requires From a Lift
Alignment is a wheels-loaded measurement job. The vehicle sits on its tires with suspension in normal ride attitude and the geometry gets read from the wheel positions. That means a two-post won’t do it – the wheels hang free, the suspension unloads, and every measurement lies. For alignment you want a four-post with drive-on runways, front turnplates that let the wheels rotate freely to full lock, and rear slip plates that let the axle move fore-and-aft as you set toe. The runways need to be long enough to seat the wheelbase of your largest customer vehicle without hanging the tires off the front lip.
For a rural farm shop that services three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups plus the occasional dually or gooseneck, we usually spec a 14,000-pound-capacity open-front four-post with 173-inch runways. That gives room for a Super Duty crew cab long-bed to sit fully on the deck with clearance for the alignment head arms to pivot. The turnplates need to be full-mechanical, not the plastic ones that wear out in two years, and the slip plates need locking pins so the wheels don’t creep during the initial roll-on. A hydraulic lift automotive built for alignment costs more than a plain drive-on, but the extra spec pays for itself the first month.
Freight Access – The Item Most Buyers Forget
Before we quote a lift for a rural address, we ask three questions about the driveway. Can a 53-foot semi with a 48-foot trailer back into the property without clipping a tree, mailbox, or utility line? Is the driveway paved, gravel with a firm base, or dirt that turns to mud when the crop truck rolls through in October? Is there a turnaround at the building, or does the driver have to back a quarter mile off a county road? On the farm-shop job, we found out the driveway had a hard 90-degree turn 200 feet from the road that a 53-footer physically could not make. That changed the freight plan before it changed the price.
The freight solution was a 26-foot straight truck with a liftgate, which added roughly $400 to the freight bill but avoided a stranded driver. If a straight truck won’t fit either – some very rural addresses need a smaller box truck or curbside delivery to a nearby farm co-op – the cost goes up again. Get the freight plan right before you sign the purchase order. We’ve seen buyers save $200 on the lift and lose $800 on redelivery fees because nobody measured the driveway. A hydraulic lift automotive that arrives at the end of a bad road is still a hydraulic lift automotive nobody can unload.
Forklift and Unloading Logistics for a Rural Shop
Once the truck is at the building, the lift needs to come off. A four-post lift ships in three or four crates: two runways, the crossbeams and columns, the power unit, and typically an accessory box for turnplates and jack tray. The heaviest crate is usually a runway at around 900 to 1,200 pounds depending on capacity. That’s more than a pallet jack can safely handle across gravel or an uneven concrete apron. On the farm-shop job, we used the customer’s own skid steer with pallet forks to walk each crate off the liftgate and into the building. That took 25 minutes total.
If you don’t have a skid steer or forklift on site, borrow one. A neighbor’s tractor with forks, a rented Bobcat for the day, or a local equipment dealer who will loan a lift truck for 30 minutes are all fine solutions. What isn’t fine is trying to pallet-jack 1,000-pound crates across gravel – somebody gets hurt, or the crate corner tips and a runway lands on its side. Plan the unloading before delivery. We check this on every rural install call and we won’t send a truck without confirmed unloading equipment lined up for the delivery day.
Floor Prep and Anchor Considerations
Four-post lifts have a wider anchor footprint than two-posts, but each individual anchor point carries less load because the weight is spread across four columns instead of two. For a 14K four-post, we look for a minimum 4-inch slab of 3,000 psi concrete over compacted base. The farm-shop had a 5-inch slab poured in 2011 and cured well past 30 days – ideal. If your slab is thinner or newer, we can still work with it, but we may spec anchor extension kits, longer wedge anchors, or in rare cases a partial slab pour under each column. We won’t set posts on unknown concrete.
Anchor pattern is dictated by the manufacturer’s template. We laid it out, marked all 16 anchor holes, drilled with a rotary hammer at 3/4-inch diameter to a depth of 4-3/4 inches, blew the dust out, and set wedge anchors to spec torque. First torque is 100 ft-lbs immediately, and we retorque 24 hours later after the vehicle load cycles the concrete. Farm shop floors sometimes have hydraulic-fluid stains from past tractor work – those stains don’t affect anchor holding power, but they do affect anchor visibility, so we chalk the pattern before we drill on a stained slab.
Picking the Right Hydraulic Lift Automotive Configuration for Alignment
Now the equipment spec itself. For alignment work, a hydraulic lift automotive four-post has to check four boxes. First, capacity has to comfortably exceed the heaviest vehicle you’ll service – a 14K lift for one-ton pickups, an 18K for medium-duty. Second, the runways have to have factory-milled turnplate pockets, not aftermarket cutouts. Third, the caster gauge rotation on the turnplates has to be smooth from lock to lock without binding. Fourth, the rear slip plates have to be independent of the runway surface so they can be pulled and stored between alignment jobs and the runway can be used flat for regular service.
We spec’d a Rotary open-front four-post at 14,000 pounds with mechanical turnplates and standard slip plates for the farm shop. Open-front means no cross-tie at the drive-off end, so alignment techs can walk straight up between the runways with their alignment heads. Optional add-ons we recommended: a rolling jack tray for wheels-off work between alignments, a set of aluminum drive-on ramps for low-clearance vehicles, and an air-line kit routed to a shop air drop at the back of the bay. Each of those extends what the lift can do beyond alignment and pays back over the life of the equipment.
Install Timeline From Delivery to First Alignment
A four-post alignment install is a full-day job for a two-person crew. Freight arrival and unloading eats the first hour. Anchor template layout, drilling, and setting takes about 90 minutes. Column stand-up and cross-tie assembly is another two hours. Runway placement, cable routing through the sheaves, hydraulic lines, and power hookup fills the afternoon. Fluid fill, initial bleed, and first rise to check level takes another hour. By dinner on install day, we’ve raised the lift to full height, cycled the safety locks, and left the anchors torqued. We’re back the next morning for the 24-hour retorque and to run the customer through the safety and operating procedure.
Alignment calibration is a separate step. If you’re bringing in a Hunter alignment machine or a comparable rack, the machine has to be calibrated to the specific lift the plates are mounted on. We coordinate that visit for you if you’re installing both the lift and the alignment head at the same time. From a fresh anchor to a first billable alignment on the farm shop, we were at 8 business days including the Hunter calibration.
What to Verify Before You Pay the Final Invoice
Before you write the final check, verify seven items. One: all safety locks engage audibly and evenly on both sides. Two: the lift raises and lowers smoothly through the full stroke with no hesitation. Three: the runways are level side-to-side and front-to-back within manufacturer tolerance – usually 1/8 inch across the deck. Four: all anchor bolts have been retorqued 24 hours post-install. Five: the ALI certification label is on the lift. Six: the manufacturer’s owner and operator manual is on site, in a binder, with the serial number recorded. Seven: your installer walked you through the daily and monthly maintenance schedule in person.
If any of those seven items are missing, hold the final payment until they’re complete. That’s not adversarial – that’s what a hydraulic lift automotive purchase looks like when both sides are professional about it. The farm-shop owner had every one of those verified before he paid us. Nine months later he’s running about six alignments a week during off-season and more during planting and harvest, when farmers want their pickups tight before the roads get rough.
