A hydraulic lift automotive install at a third-generation family garage in northern Missouri means we are working around history. The building is probably older than the current owner, the slab was poured for a very different mix of vehicles, and the exhaust and driveline work that keeps the shop paid demands specific under-vehicle clearance the original bay was never designed for. When the owner called us asking for real dimensions — not brochure ranges, actual measurements — we spent an afternoon with tape measures and a laser level to build the site survey. The bay we measured — a real family garage in northern Missouri

The garage bay is 26 feet deep by 14 feet wide with a ceiling that runs 11 feet 4 inches at the peak and drops to 10 feet 8 inches at the roll-up door. The slab is 4.5 inches thick where we cored it, roughly 3,200 psi based on the rebound-hammer readings we took. The 220V drop is on the north wall about eighteen feet from the planned lift location. The roll-up door is 10 feet wide by 9 feet 6 inches tall. Those numbers dictate what hydraulic lift automotive options are actually on the table, not what the online catalog says fits.

Exhaust and driveline work — U-joints, driveshafts, transmission mounts, header replacement on the older muscle-car work this family shop still does — demands that the vehicle come up high enough for a tech to stand under it and pull a driveshaft. That means the lift needs to raise a vehicle so the chassis is about 68 to 72 inches off the floor. Working the math backward from ceiling height, we can go with a clear-floor overhead if we spec carefully, or an asymmetric that leaves the overhead lower. Both are viable for this bay, with tradeoffs.

Real dimensions on a Rotary SPO10 for this bay

The Rotary SPO10 10,000 lb clear-floor two-post in its standard configuration has an overall height of 145 inches — that is 12 feet 1 inch. That does not fit under 11 feet 4 inches. What Rotary offers, and what we would spec for this bay, is the low-ceiling column option which brings overall height down to about 128 inches or 10 feet 8 inches, exactly at the roll-up door limit. That is tight but installable.

Drive-through width on the SPO10 is 100 inches inside the columns — 8 feet 4 inches — which fits a 14-foot-wide bay comfortably. Rise is about 74 inches to the top of the swing pads, and with a 6-inch screw-pad extension the vehicle chassis lands at 80 inches off the floor. That gives us a tech-stand-under working height of about 60 inches which is fine for a five-foot-eleven driveline tech but tight for a taller one. If the shop’s lead tech is over six feet, we would recommend the SPO12 with its extra rise, on the same low-ceiling column option, and pull a permit for a small ceiling notch above the overhead cross-tube. It is not exotic — plenty of older Missouri shops have that treatment.

Real dimensions on a Challenger CL10 alternative

The Challenger CL10 in standard clear-floor is essentially the same envelope as the SPO10. Overall height 147 inches, drive-through width about 105 inches, rise about 74 inches. Same fit problem in this bay. Challenger’s answer to low ceilings is either the low-ceiling column option — which brings overall down to about 130 inches — or their asymmetric two-post which uses a different overhead geometry and comes in lower.

The asymmetric layout tilts the columns and offsets the arm lengths so a shorter overhead runs across the top. It gains you ceiling clearance at the cost of drive-through width and vehicle centering. For a family garage that runs a mix of older muscle cars, mid-size pickups, and the occasional customer sedan, the asymmetric can work well because the vehicle mix is not all one width. What we would not do in this bay is force the standard clear-floor into a ceiling that does not accept it. A hydraulic lift automotive install with the overhead cross-tube touching the ceiling is a failed install even if it lifts a car once.

Driveline clearance math the shop should understand

To pull a driveshaft out of a mid-size truck, you need chassis height minus driveshaft length minus a few inches of angle clearance. On a typical mid-size pickup the driveshaft is about 55 inches long. To drop it clean you need the chassis at about 65 inches off the floor with the transmission-end of the shaft angled down. That means the lift rise must land the vehicle chassis at 65 inches minimum. The SPO10 at full rise with pad extension gets you there. The SPO12 gets you comfortable overhead. The low-ceiling column option costs you rise, so we cross-check the rise number against the tallest driveshaft the shop expects to handle.

On exhaust work the math is easier because you are working with shorter sections. Most exhaust jobs need the chassis at 60 inches or higher, which any 10K or 12K two-post hits at full rise. Where exhaust gets tricky is header work on older V8s — the header itself is bulky and clearing the frame rail with a fresh header often requires the vehicle at max rise and the tech using an overhead pulley. The hydraulic lift automotive spec matters here mostly for stability at max rise, and the SPO10 and CL10 are both solid at full extension with a properly cycled cylinder.

Slab and anchor spec for a 1970s-era Missouri floor

The slab measured 4.5 inches at 3,200 psi. Minimum spec for a 10K two-post per ALI is 4 inches at 3,000 psi. We are barely above minimum. That is not a disqualifier but it is not comfortable. What we would recommend for this specific family garage: install into the existing slab, use the manufacturer-specified 3/4-inch wedge anchors at the specified embedment depth, and torque check at 30 days and at one year. If the slab shows any anchor movement at the 30-day check, we cut and pour a new pad under each column.

The reason we do not cut and pour up front on a 4.5-inch 3,200 psi slab is that we would be spending mid-three-figures per column on a job that is probably going to be fine. We do not sell precautionary concrete work. What we do sell is the follow-up service visit at 30 days to verify anchor torque and witness-ring position. That runs a nominal fee and it is the responsible way to install a hydraulic lift automotive on a slab that is above minimum but not comfortably above minimum. Every install in this age of Missouri bay gets that treatment.

Electrical and pump specs for the family garage

The 220V drop is on the north wall eighteen feet from the planned column. Standard SPO10 or CL10 pump wants 220V single-phase, twenty amp, at the lift with disconnect. Running the existing drop out to the lift means adding conduit and a disconnect box near the columns, which is straightforward electrical work. If the shop already has a licensed electrician they trust, that is a one-morning job. If they want us to include it in the install package, we quote it as a line item — usually mid-three-figures for a run of that length with the disconnect.

The pump on the standard 10K two-post draws about sixteen to eighteen amps at start on a cold morning and settles into a fourteen amp running current. Twenty amp circuit is correct. Do not undersize. Do not oversize either — a 60 amp feeder to a 20 amp lift is wasted copper. The other pump detail worth knowing: on the standard hydraulic lift automotive setup, the pump reservoir holds about three gallons of hydraulic fluid, and we recommend an annual filter change and a fluid change every three years for shop-duty use.
