High enough to reach the drain plug and filter without ducking; low enough to see the pan clearly as you crack the plug. Have your drain pan positioned before the plug comes out, keep a torque wrench ready for both the plug and the filter housing, and never dump used oil down a shop drain. Iowa DNR runs free used-oil collection at most county solid-waste sites, and every parts chain in the state also accepts it.
