A mobile mechanic in east-central Iowa asked us to help him spec a hydraulic lift automotive install for his own personal shop, one that would double as seasonal storage for his winter project car and his summer convertible. The setup: a mobile mechanic’s home shop that has to do two things
The starting point was a 30-by-40 pole barn with 12-foot ceilings. The mechanic runs his mobile business out of the shop by day, and by winter he stores a partially restored muscle car overhead while the daily driver sits under it. That dual purpose immediately narrows the hydraulic lift automotive category to a 4-post storage lift, because 4-post is the only style that comfortably supports overhead vehicle storage without occupying the shop with additional structure.
The daily driver and the storage vehicle both fell inside 5,000 pounds, well under the capacity range of any modern 4-post. Ceiling clearance of 12 feet gave us a comfortable working budget for a standard-height 4-post with room to spare. From there, the spec-compare exercise came down to three candidate models across two brands.
Candidate one: 8,000-pound standard-height 4-post
The first candidate was a standard-height 8,000-pound 4-post from BendPak’s home line. The specs put the drive-on runways at 74 inches wide overall with a runway length that accepted the storage car with margin on both ends. Lift height ran to about 72 inches at the top lock, giving 60 inches of usable underneath clearance with the daily driver parked below. That is enough to walk under without ducking for a shorter user.
The tradeoff was that 8,000 pounds was more than the mechanic needed for two lighter vehicles. Extra capacity is usually good, but here it also meant slightly heavier columns and a larger footprint than the smaller option. A hydraulic lift automotive purchase should not oversize for its own sake. Still, the BendPak was on the shortlist because BendPak’s parts pipeline in the home segment is solid and the paint finish holds up.
Candidate two: 7,000-pound standard 4-post
The second candidate was a 7,000-pound 4-post from Atlas’s home line. The physical footprint was slightly smaller, the capacity comfortably exceeded both vehicles, and the price point ran below candidate one. Runway width was similar at just under 74 inches. Lock heights and rise were within an inch of the BendPak. On paper, this was the frontrunner because the mechanic’s actual weights sat comfortably below the 7,000-pound ceiling.
The tradeoff on this one was long-term parts availability. Atlas is a reasonable brand at the home segment, but Rotary and BendPak still dominate the aftermarket parts pipeline. For a mechanic who plans to service his own equipment, that pipeline is worth weight. A hydraulic lift automotive setup with easier parts access can be worth a few hundred dollars more up front.
Candidate three: 9,000-pound extended-length 4-post
The third candidate came into the discussion because the mechanic mentioned that his storage car was a long-wheelbase muscle car. Extended-length runways from Rotary or BendPak accept longer wheelbases without dangling the tail off the back. This one had 9,000-pound capacity and a runway length that added 12 inches over the standard 8,000-pound model.
The tradeoff was ceiling clearance. Extended-height 4-posts exist too, and they raise the vehicle higher, but the standard-height extended-length version keeps the top-lock position at roughly 72 inches while adding length. That was the key clarification. A hydraulic lift automotive purchase for a mechanic who wants length without more ceiling should focus on extended-length rather than extended-height variants.
How we made the call
The final choice was the 9,000-pound extended-length 4-post. The reasoning was straightforward. The longer runway solved the storage car’s wheelbase concern with room to spare. The additional 1,000 pounds of capacity over the 8,000 was margin that would matter the day the mechanic decides to store a heavier vehicle. And the ceiling clearance still worked because we deliberately chose standard-height, not extended-height.
Total delivered cost landed in the mid-range of the three candidates, closer to candidate one than candidate three’s premium ceiling variants. That price fell within the mechanic’s budget and financed cleanly on the 0% APR 12-month program. The 90-day deferred window let him schedule the install for early fall, ahead of the winter storage rotation, without a first payment before the lift was working.
Install day and the concrete question
The pole barn had a 4-inch concrete pad poured to residential spec. We core-tested at the four column footprints and confirmed the pour was sound and thick enough for a 9,000-pound 4-post. That is not always the answer with pole barns, so the test mattered. If the pad had been light, we would have poured pads at the column footprints only, but here we bolted directly to the existing floor.
The install itself ran a single day. Our installer had the 4-post assembled, plumb, level, and safety-tested by mid-afternoon. Power unit ran off a dedicated 220V drop the mechanic’s electrician had prepped the week before. Seasonal rotation and what the mechanic gets out of it
The mechanic now stores the winter project car overhead from October through April, and the summer convertible spends those same months on the shop floor. In May, they swap. The lift lets him park a second vehicle in the same footprint that used to hold one, and the mobile business continues out of the same shop. That is the whole point of a 4-post home lift: doubling the shop’s storage capacity without doubling the shop’s square footage.
The other benefit is service access. When the mechanic wants to work on the stored car, he cycles it down to the floor, lifts the daily driver overhead instead, and works on the project.
