An Ames heavy-duty truck shop owner walked into our showroom last October with a very specific problem: he needed a hydraulic lift automotive setup that could store customer trucks and RVs through the Iowa winter, meaning the lift had to hold a vehicle in the air for four to six months at a time without dropping. That changed the electrical, changed the concrete, and changed the brand shortlist. Storage-duty and service-duty are not the same use case, and the electrical circuit and phase requirements ripple through the whole quote. Storage vs Service Determines the Whole Design
A hydraulic lift automotive setup used for daily service cycles up and down 20 to 50 times a day. A storage lift cycles up once and stays there for months. Those are different mechanical duty cycles, and they favor different lift architectures. For storage, a 4-post with mechanical safety locks is dramatically preferred over a 2-post. The mechanical locks (steel pawls that drop into position at each lock height) mean the vehicle is resting on steel, not on hydraulic pressure. Hydraulics leak over months. Steel does not.
A 2-post can technically hold a vehicle indefinitely if the safety pawls engage and the hydraulic system just goes along for the ride, but 2-posts were not designed for it, and the arm restraint geometry is not optimized for long-term unattended weight. For the Ames shop’s use case, storing a customer’s antique pickup or RV over the winter, we specified a 4-post 14,000 lb capacity storage-configured lift with drip trays, mechanical lock engagement at every 4 inches of travel, and a 220V single-phase power feed. That decision reset the electrical scope before we even walked the panel.
Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Power
The single most misunderstood spec on a hydraulic lift automotive purchase is phase. Most commercial 2-post and 4-post lifts come standard with a 220V single-phase pump motor. Heavier commercial lifts and mobile column sets typically require 208V or 480V three-phase. If your building has three-phase power available and metered, running a three-phase lift is slightly more efficient (faster rise time, cooler motor, longer motor life). If your building is single-phase only, running a three-phase lift requires a phase converter, which adds cost and a maintenance item.
The Ames shop’s building had single-phase 200A service. That immediately eliminated any three-phase lift options and simplified the quote. For most standalone truck shops in the Ames area, single-phase service is what the utility drops from the pole unless the building has a specific historic reason for three-phase (typically old machining or an old dairy operation). Never assume three-phase is available; always look at the meter and the service panel labels before you spec a lift. 208V vs 240V vs 480V, and Why It Matters
Within single-phase, the two common voltages are 208V (rare in single-family or small commercial) and 240V (the standard). Most hydraulic lift automotive pumps are dual-rated 208-240V single-phase and will run fine on either. The one gotcha is that a pump rated at 220V and fed 208V will run slightly slower and hotter, and over years of service will not last quite as long. If you know you have 208V, buy a 208V-specific pump. It costs the same and is dialed for your service.
On the three-phase side, 208V, 240V, and 480V are all common in commercial spaces. Motor sizes get smaller (physically) as voltage increases for the same horsepower, so a 480V pump motor on a mobile column is more compact and slightly more efficient than a 208V equivalent. For the Ames shop, we did not need to worry about this because single-phase was the only option, but for any shop with three-phase available, always spec at the higher voltage if the pump is available in that voltage. Electrical Install Cost Specifics
What the electrical install line actually covers on a lift quote varies wildly by installer. Our line typically includes: 30 amps or 40 amps of dedicated circuit run in EMT conduit from your panel to a receptacle within 6 feet of the pump, the receptacle itself, the breaker at the panel, the wire, and the labor to pull and terminate. It does not include: a service panel upgrade if your existing panel does not have room for the breaker, a subpanel installation, or any conduit run over 40 feet.
For the Ames shop the panel was already 200A with two spare 30-amp double-pole spots. That made the electrical install a straightforward two-hour job at roughly $340. The next shop over in Nevada had an older 100A panel completely full, requiring a subpanel install that pushed the electrical portion to $1,200. Always have your electrician (or ours) walk the panel before the lift arrives. That single site visit up front saves more money than any other install-planning step you can take.
Circuit Sizing and Wire Gauge
Circuit sizing on a hydraulic lift automotive install follows the motor’s full-load amps plus a service-factor margin. A typical 3 HP single-phase 220V pump draws about 15 amps at full load, meaning a 20 amp circuit is the code minimum and a 30 amp circuit is the practical recommendation. On starting inrush the motor briefly pulls 3 to 4 times full-load amps, which is why a 20 amp breaker will occasionally nuisance-trip on a cold start.
Wire gauge for a 30 amp circuit at typical shop distances is 10 AWG copper, which is what our installers pull as standard. For runs over 75 feet, we bump to 8 AWG to stay under the 3 percent voltage drop threshold that the code recommends for motor circuits. Bigger wire also means the pump starts more crisply on cold winter mornings, which for an Ames shop that opens at 6 AM in January is a real quality-of-life difference for the tech pushing the up button. Freight, Rigging, and Concrete for a Storage Lift
Freight from our Ames warehouse to an Ames customer is essentially our local delivery rate: $150 for a 4-post lift on a pallet, delivered to your door on our own truck. Rigging (getting it inside the building and set up) is another $300 for a typical single-lift install. Concrete: a 4-post storage lift does not require the same 4-inch minimum slab that a 2-post requires because the load is distributed across four columns rather than two. A 4-inch commercial slab is fine, and even a 3.5-inch residential slab with good rebar mesh will hold a home-storage 4-post.
For the Ames shop we did not need to touch concrete at all: the building had been poured to a nominal 5-inch commercial spec and the anchor pull-test came in above spec on the first try.
