Step one: define the mission honestly
The first branch of the decision tree is not budget. It is honesty about what the lift is actually going to do. If the lift is primarily a service lift with occasional storage, we push people to two-post. If it is primarily storage that will occasionally see wrench work, we push to four-post. Step two: capacity per car, not average

But we do not rate lifts by fleet average, because a nine-thousand-pound lift with an offset load caused by a heavy rear engine can still hit the corner rating and complain. If he had gone single-lift the math would have penciled to zero — he would have ended up trailer-storing at least two cars off-site and paying rent all winter.
Step four: extended-length rails or standard
Race cars are not all sedan-length. His shortest was a hundred and one inches wheelbase. His longest sat on a hundred and forty. Standard four-post rails work up to about a hundred and thirty-eight comfortably; the extended-length option gets you to a hundred sixty and change. He paid for extended. That decision felt optional until his second season, when a friend needed to leave a Suburban parked over the winter and paid him rent for the space. Extended rails paid for themselves in one season on unrelated income. This is not a scenario you can plan for. It is a scenario that shows up because you left the room to invite it.
Step five: casters or bolt-down
Race guys love casters. They love the idea of rolling a lift out of the way. But casters cut usable capacity, add flex under load, and turn a hydraulic lift automotive rig into something you would not want to work under during a long night. He asked.
