The first year of hydraulic lift automotive ownership for an RV and trailer service shop in Iowa City tells you almost everything you need to know about your lift decision. We know because we installed a set of Rotary SPO12 two-post lifts at an Iowa City shop three summers ago and stayed in touch with the service manager through the first twelve months. The install was scheduled around their fall suspension and shock-replacement rush, and the crew wanted the bays cycled and inspected before winter class-A motorhome storage-prep season started. What follows is the first-year story: pre-install, cure week, first thirty days, mid-year, and twelve-month annual. Every number is anonymized but real.

Pre-install: measuring twice on an old shop floor

The Iowa City shop was in a mixed-use building poured in the mid-1970s, and the first thing we did before any hydraulic lift automotive equipment came off the truck was pull a slab core. The core came back at 4.5 inches of 3,000 psi concrete with wire mesh reinforcement — enough for a 12K two-post if we placed the columns clear of a floor drain trench that ran diagonally across the back of the bay.

That single measurement moved the column layout eighteen inches forward from where the service manager had originally sketched it, which changed the pull-through clearance from awkward to comfortable. We also mapped ceiling clearance to the lowest overhead obstruction, which turned out to be a radiant tube heater. The heater cleared a raised Class A slide-out by fourteen inches, tight but workable. Measuring twice at pre-install saved a lift-return and a two-week reschedule, which on an RV shop heading into a fall suspension rush would have been a real revenue hit.

Cure week and dry-run cycling

Anchor cure on a fresh install is where most rushed hydraulic lift automotive projects go wrong. The wedge anchors we set in the Iowa City slab needed twenty-four hours of undisturbed cure before we could load-cycle them. The service manager wanted the lift running Wednesday for a scheduled motorhome. We set the anchors on Monday morning, cured them Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning we ran the dry-run cycling protocol — twenty empty raises and drops, then a torque re-verification on every anchor bolt.

Two of the twelve anchors on that pair of lifts lost about ten foot-pounds of torque on the first cycles, which is normal for a first-set anchor. We re-torqued to spec and cycled ten more times. On the tenth cycle the torque held. That is the checkpoint we treat as go-live. The lift then took its first real vehicle — a Class A motorhome on the front axle for a shock inspection — and the arm restraints engaged clean, the lock ladder caught cleanly at every stop, and the service manager was up and billing.

Arm restraints and safety-cam engagement in year one

Arm restraints and safety-cam engagement are the two mechanical safeties that keep a hydraulic lift automotive from letting a vehicle drop or shift mid-service. The arm restraint is a geared collar on the arm pivot that engages when the arm takes load and locks the arm swing. The safety cam is the lock-ladder cam that catches the lift at each height stop and holds the vehicle if hydraulic pressure fails.

In the first year at the Iowa City shop we saw exactly two issues with either. On the third month, the passenger-side arm restraint on the front bay felt slightly gritty during engagement — a chip of pad rubber had jammed the gear. We cleaned it, greased it, and it has been silent since. On the ninth month, the safety-cam ladder on the rear bay skipped one click on descent — a hydraulic lowering valve had drifted out of adjustment. We rebuilt the valve in twenty minutes. Both issues were caught by the crew’s daily inspection card.

Suspension and shock replacement: why the SPO12 earned its keep

The reason the Iowa City shop specified a 12,000 lb hydraulic lift automotive over a 10K was suspension and shock work on Class A and Class C motorhomes. A loaded Class C on an E-450 chassis weighs 11,200 to 11,800 lb wet, and you do not want to be running a 10K lift at 98 percent of rated capacity. The 12K rating buys margin. It also buys arm reach — the SPO12 arms swing wider than the SPO10, which matters when you are trying to place the pad on a motorhome frame rail that sits inboard of a slide-out bump-out.

In the first year the shop ran roughly forty suspension jobs, ranging from single-shock replacements on trailers to full airbag conversions on rear axles. The lift handled every one without a complaint. The one time the service manager called us was when a torque wrench slipped and dinged the polished cylinder rod on the driver-side column. We rebuilt the cylinder seal on-site the following week and shipped a replacement rod the week after.

Mid-year check: what six months looks like

At six months we returned to the Iowa City shop for a mid-year check that is not a formal ALI inspection but a courtesy visit we run on every new hydraulic lift automotive install. The check covers the same items as an annual inspection at half depth: anchor bolt torque verification, arm restraint function test, safety-cam engagement test, hydraulic hose visual, cylinder rod visual, power unit fluid level and color, and pad condition.

Of those items, the pads were the only ones showing meaningful wear. RV frame rails often have a rougher underside than a car frame, and a passenger-side pad on the front bay had shown compression rings from a motorhome frame. We rotated the pads and added a spare set to the shop’s shelf. Total mid-year service time was about ninety minutes for two lifts, and the shop stayed operational the entire visit — we cycled one lift while working on the other. That is the kind of visit we prefer, boring and quick.

The twelve-month annual and what changed

At twelve months we performed the ALI-endorsed annual on both hydraulic lift automotive bays and delivered a signed inspection form to the service manager. Every item on the inspection passed. The hydraulic fluid was still clean and at proper level. Anchor torque held on every bolt within specification. Arm restraints engaged cleanly on both arms of both lifts. Safety-cam ladders caught at every stop.

The one item we flagged was a spot of light surface corrosion on the driver-side column base of the rear bay, where a shop floor drain had backed up during a wet spring and left standing water for two days. We wire-brushed and touched up the paint on the spot, and recommended the shop verify drain flow before spring rains. That was the entire twelve-month report. The service manager renewed the annual inspection contract on the spot and added a third bay to next year’s expansion plan.

What year-one ownership actually teaches you

The lesson from twelve months of hydraulic lift automotive ownership at the Iowa City RV shop is that the equipment itself will do its job. What determines whether the ownership is smooth or rough is the daily inspection habit and the distributor relationship. The shop’s crew ran the daily inspection card faithfully and caught both of the small issues before they became downtime events.
