Collectors and daily-driver shops want different things. A shop wants wheels-free access and speed. A collector wants a car to sit safely for six months without touching a suspension component, without straining a two-post’s arms, and without needing the owner to think about it. Four posts spread the load across four runways under the tires, which is exactly the load path the car was designed for. That is why nearly every long-term storage install we do ends up as a four-post rather than a two-post or a scissor.
The second reason is the drive-on factor. Our Quad Cities customer is in his sixties, he stores a big convertible and a small British roadster, and he did not want to crawl under a car positioning arm pads twice a week. Drive on, hit up, set the mechanical locks, walk away. The third reason is resale of the floor space itself — a four-post effectively doubles a bay, and if he ever sells the property, a professionally anchored lift in a clean barn is an asset rather than a liability. After the first year, we recommend annual inspection for anyone storing vehicles overhead, and we tell owners the honest version: if you check fluid and cables yourself every few months, you can stretch to every other year on a lightly cycled home lift. Over twenty years, expect roughly this. Hydraulic fluid changes every five to seven years — negligible. One cylinder seal kit and rebuild somewhere in the 8-to-15-year window, low hundreds in parts plus labor. One power unit replacement or motor rebuild, plausibly once, mid hundreds to low four figures. One set of cables around the 15-year mark if the barn is humid, several hundred plus labor. Annual or biennial inspections. Call the twenty-year maintenance total somewhere in the low four figures for a home lift that is cycled a few dozen times a year rather than a few thousand. Compare that to indoor climate-controlled storage for one car in the corridor, which will exceed the entire twenty-year cost of the lift in about three or four years.
