The Dimensions a Service Manager Actually Needs

For a Marion dealership tire and wheel bay, the numbers that matter are overall width outside the columns, drive-thru width between columns, overall height, arm reach at the front and back, and rise time from floor to full extension. A typical 10,000 lb clear-floor two-post runs about 138 inches wide overall, 108 to 110 inches drive-thru, and 145 inches overall height. Rise time is around forty-five seconds. Arm reach is between 28 and 60 inches on the front, and about 30 to 74 inches on the rear on an asymmetric setup.

A dealership fleet includes a Ford Super Duty crew cab, a Toyota Sequoia, a Chevy Bolt and a Mustang GT, and every one of those has to lift correctly. Rise Time and Duty Cycle for a Tire Bay

A tire and wheel bay runs a very specific duty cycle: quick up, spin four wheels, quick down, next car. Rise time matters more than in most bays. Every ten seconds of rise time across forty vehicles in a shift adds up to a full technician-hour lost. A well-chosen hydraulic lift automotive package for tire work runs a two-horsepower motor, a real Weber or equivalent hydraulic pump, and a cylinder sized to move fast without cavitating.

Duty cycle is the other silent killer. A cheap import pump is rated for one lift every three or four minutes and starts overheating during a busy Saturday. A real Rotary or Challenger commercial pump will happily run continuous cycles all day and never overheat. If your Marion tire bay is doing thirty or forty tire rotations on a Saturday, spec the commercial pump. A wheel-service lift has wheels-free supplemental jacks or an integrated rolling jack pair that let a technician lift the vehicle off the arms and spin all four wheels free. For a dedicated tire bay this is often worth the upcharge because tire work moves faster and the technician is not fighting to spin a wheel against arm interference. For a general-service bay that only does occasional tire work, a plain two-post is fine.

We usually recommend that a Marion dealership dedicate at least one bay to a wheel-service hydraulic lift automotive setup and run standard two-posts in the general bays. The wheel-service configuration also plays nicely with balancing and TPMS work, and it lets a technician handle a tire-and-brake job without a second lift cycle.
