A collector outside Cedar Falls called us in early spring with a garage full of cars and a specific problem: he wanted to rebuild the front suspension on a 1960s coupe without spending another winter on his back under jack stands. He’d been shopping a hydraulic lift automotive setup for eight months and had two quotes — one for a used four-post pulled out of a closed dealership, one for a new unit shipped to his door. He couldn’t decide, and honestly, neither option was obviously wrong. We walked him through it, installed the one he picked, and then took his first service call about ten months later. This is that whole first year, start to finish, including the part where something went wrong.

The Decision He Was Actually Making

He framed it as used versus new, but the real question was different: how much of his own time was he willing to spend becoming a lift mechanic? That’s the honest split. A used unit is cheaper on day one and requires you to accept some unknown maintenance debt. A new unit costs more and hands you a warranty, a parts catalog, and a phone number. For a collector with six vehicles and a full-time job, the value of not troubleshooting a bypassing power unit on a Saturday is real money, even if it doesn’t show up on a spreadsheet.

The used four-post in question had come out of a dealership service department. Good brand, correct capacity, complete with runways, ramps, and a jack tray. The seller wanted it gone and had priced it at roughly a third of new. On paper, excellent. In practice, three unknowns: cable condition, cylinder condition, and whether the runways had been abused by years of dealer-tech duty. We told him the cables alone could run several hundred dollars a set, and a cylinder rebuild or replacement several hundred more — which would erase a meaningful chunk of his savings. He asked the right follow-up: if I budget for all of that up front and it still comes in under new, is used the better call? Usually yes, if the structure is sound and the brand still has a parts pipeline. That’s the framework we gave him, and it applies to anyone shopping a hydraulic lift automotive purchase in Iowa.

How We Inspected the Used Unit Before He Bought It

We told him not to hand over money until someone had eyes on it under load. He arranged for the seller to raise an empty vehicle and let us look. The checklist is short but it matters. Runways: check for cracked welds at the crossmember joints, dented or dished plate where jacks had been set, and any bend along the length. Columns: sight down each one for plumb and look at the base plate welds and anchor holes for elongation or rust-through. Cables: inspect at the sheaves and at the swage fittings for broken strands, and check that every sheave spins freely by hand.

Then the hydraulic check. Raise to full height, shut off the power unit, and watch the runways for five minutes. Drift means bypass — either worn piston seals in the cylinder or a lowering valve that isn’t seating. This one drifted about a quarter inch over five minutes, which is borderline. We pulled the fluid cap and found oil that looked like coffee, which told us it hadn’t been changed in a very long time. Slow rise under load pointed at a tired pump. Our verdict: sound steel, honest structure, but budget a cylinder seal kit, a full fluid change with the correct viscosity, a set of cables, and possibly a power unit. He negotiated the price down accordingly and bought it. That’s the outcome we like — not “don’t buy used,” but “buy used with your eyes open.” We see the opposite constantly: someone buys a marketplace lift sight-unseen and calls us three weeks later because a fresh cable snapped over a grooved sheave.

Install Day: Slab, Layout, and the Thing Nobody Measures

His garage was a detached three-stall built in 2004 with a 4-inch slab and a 10-foot 6-inch ceiling at the trusses. That’s tight for a four-post but workable for storage and light service, and it ruled out any two-post entirely. We measured the actual clear height under the lowest garage door track and header — the number people forget — and it came in at 9 feet 11 inches at the door opening. That governs how tall a vehicle you can park underneath, and it’s the constraint that surprises collectors.

A four-post distributes load across four base plates, so slab requirements are gentler than a two-post; we still verified thickness by drilling a test hole. Freestanding four-post units often don’t require anchoring at all per the manufacturer, though we anchor when the customer plans to use a rolling bridge jack, because side loading from a jack tray is exactly when you want the columns locked to the floor. Layout took longer than assembly. We set the runways so the driver’s door opened clear of the wall, left aisle room to roll a transmission jack down one side, and positioned the power unit column where the cord reached a dedicated 110V circuit without a run of extension cord across the floor. Then we cycled it eight or ten times empty, checked that all four locks engaged simultaneously, and leveled the runways front to back. The thinking is the part that determines whether you like the lift in year three.

Suspension and Shock Work on a Four-Post

Here’s where we had to manage expectations. A four-post holds a car by its tires, which means the suspension stays loaded and the wheels stay on the ground — great for storage, oil changes, and exhaust work, but wrong for pulling control arms or replacing shocks. To do suspension work you need a rolling bridge jack that spans the runways and lifts the vehicle by its frame or subframe, taking the wheels off the runways so the suspension can hang free. He bought one with the lift, and it’s the accessory that turned a storage rack into a service bay.

Working the front end of the coupe, he used the bridge jack under the crossmember, raised until the front tires cleared, and dropped the jack’s own mechanical locks. Coil spring work on an older car demands a proper spring compressor and patience regardless of what’s holding the vehicle up, and we told him that plainly. For shock replacement on a modern vehicle, the same approach works — get the wheel hanging, and you have room to work the lower mount. What a four-post can’t easily do is give you full open access to the underside with the suspension unloaded and the wheels off; that’s two-post territory. In a 10-foot garage, though, a four-post plus a bridge jack plus a good pair of low-profile stands covers the vast majority of collector work. Month Ten: The First Real Service Call

He called in January. The lift would rise about two-thirds of the way and then crawl, and it wouldn’t hold overnight — a car left up had settled onto the safety locks by morning. Two symptoms, likely one cause. Over the phone we ran him through it: check fluid level cold, then look at the color, then raise it and shut off the pump and watch. It drifted. Classic internal bypass.

We came out with a seal kit and pulled the cylinder. The bore had light scoring but nothing catastrophic, the piston seals were flattened and glazed, and the fluid still had some of that original dealership sludge in it despite a change. We reseal ed the cylinder, flushed the reservoir, replaced the filter screen, refilled with the correct hydraulic oil, and cycled it a dozen times to bleed air. Rise time went from over two minutes back to about 50 seconds, and it held rock solid. Total cost was a fraction of a new power unit, which is typically the case — cylinders and pumps on a hydraulic lift automotive system are serviceable parts, not disposable ones. What the First Year Cost, and Whether Used Won

Adding it up: purchase price around a third of new, plus fluid and filter, plus a bridge jack, plus install labor, plus the month-ten cylinder reseal and one sheave. All in, he landed somewhere in the neighborhood of half to sixty percent of what a comparable new four-post plus install would have run — and he ended up with a known-condition lift, because everything questionable had now been opened and inspected. That’s the underrated benefit of buying used from a good brand: after the first round of service, you know exactly what you own.

Would used win every time? No. If the columns had been out of plumb, or the runways cracked at a weld, or the brand had no parts catalog, we’d have told him to walk. We’ve seen orphan-brand lifts where the cylinder has a proprietary rod end nobody makes anymore, and at that point the cheap lift becomes an expensive boat anchor. The framework is simple: sound structure plus available parts equals a used unit worth buying. Either condition failing means buy new. How to Run the Same Framework on Your Own Purchase

Start with the building, not the lift. Measure clear ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, measure the door opening height separately, verify slab thickness, and note where your electrical is. Those four numbers eliminate most of the catalog immediately and save you from falling in love with something that won’t fit. Then decide what work you actually plan to do. Storage and fluid changes point to a four-post. Suspension, brakes, and exhaust with the wheels off point to a two-post if you have the height, or a four-post plus a rolling bridge jack if you don’t. Pure tire and brake work in a low garage points to a mid-rise scissor.

Then, and only then, price used against new. If you’re looking at used, put eyes on it under load, watch for drift with the pump off, check every sheave by hand, look at the fluid, and confirm the manufacturer still supports parts. Budget for cables, a seal kit, and fresh fluid regardless — assume you’ll spend it, and if you don’t, that’s a bonus. If the numbers still favor used after that, buy it with confidence. If not, new is cheap insurance.
