Body shops in southeast Iowa run tight schedules. A shop that turns eight vehicles a day cannot afford a lift that takes forty-five seconds longer per cycle than the newer competition. When we quote a hydraulic lift automotive replacement to a foreman, the payback conversation always starts here. A newer two-post lift with a modern power unit and correctly sized hydraulics will lift a 6,000 lb pickup in about forty seconds and lower it in the same time. Freight logistics: what actually arrives on the truck

A body shop foreman ordering a hydraulic lift automotive package for the first time is often surprised at what shows up on the freight truck. A standard two-post lift breaks down into two columns, an overhead crossbar or hydraulic hose bundle depending on symmetric or asymmetric design, four arms, a power unit, an accessory box with hoses and cables, and an anchor kit. Total weight is usually 1,800 to 2,400 lb. Everything ships freight class 85 on a single 8-foot pallet, and the driver expects a loading dock, forklift, or pallet-jack-with-liftgate for delivery.

If you have none of those, we quote it that way from the start — either we deliver it ourselves on our own trailer, or we arrange liftgate service, or the freight terminal calls you to schedule a will-call pickup. The freight decision matters because a driver who shows up and cannot unload will leave the pallet on the road, and you now own the lift on the shoulder. Freight surprises are the number-one call we get from first-time buyers in southeast Iowa. We ask three questions on every hydraulic lift automotive quote: do you have a dock, do you have a forklift, do you have hands. Unloading a crate that weighs 2,400 pounds

Assume you do not have a loading dock. Assume the freight truck is going to pull into your parking lot and the driver is going to hand you a bill of lading. What now? For a hydraulic lift automotive shipment that weighs 2,400 lb on a pallet, you have four honest options. Option one is a rented forklift for the day — around a low three-figure fee in southeast Iowa depending on availability.

Option two is a liftgate on the freight truck, which we can spec in advance for a modest upcharge on the freight quote; the liftgate drops the pallet to ground level and you use a pallet jack to move it inside. Option four, the one we do not recommend, is four guys with straps trying to walk a 2,400 lb pallet off a flatbed. The math on option four does not work and somebody ends up hurt. Forklift versus pallet jack versus none of the above

Once the pallet is off the truck and on the ground, you have to get the components into the bay. A standard shop pallet jack — the kind you rent from a hardware store for a two-figure daily fee — will move a two-post lift on flat concrete just fine. What it will not do is lift the pallet up to a bay floor if the bay is above grade, which is common in older southeast Iowa buildings.

If your bay floor is 8 inches above the parking lot, you need a forklift or a ramp. A ramp is doable if you can borrow one; a forklift is easier if you can rent one. The other option is to unpack the pallet on the parking lot and carry components in one at a time. The columns are the heaviest single pieces at roughly 500 lb each. Four guys, two on each end, can walk a column into a bay if the path is short and dry. In a snowstorm in January, it is not happening. We usually plan install day for a stretch of dry weather and coordinate with the foreman on which unloading path fits his building. Anchor bolt install on southeast Iowa concrete

Southeast Iowa body shops sit on concrete slabs poured across three or four decades. Some are 4-inch commercial pours with #4 rebar on 16-inch centers, exactly what a two-post lift needs. Others are 3-inch residential-grade pours over gravel with no rebar at all, which will not hold a hydraulic lift automotive anchor under a 6,000 lb dynamic load. Before we drill any hole, we core-test the slab in two spots — one under each column footprint — and confirm the concrete is at least 4 inches deep and hits 3,000 psi.

If it does not, we do not install. We tell the foreman what needs to happen — either cut and repour a 6-foot square at each column with 3,500 psi mix, or we walk away. The right anchor for a modern two-post is a 3/4-inch wedge anchor set into 6 inches of embedment, torqued to spec, then torqued again after 24 hours. Skipping any of that shortens the working life of the lift and voids the warranty. Oil pan gasket workflow after the new lift is in

Once the new hydraulic lift automotive setup is running, the oil pan gasket workflow you were fighting with under the old lift gets faster. A modern two-post asymmetric lift lets you swing the arms out of the way after the vehicle is up, which opens straight access to the oil pan on almost every modern pickup and SUV. Cross-member interference — the reason oil pan jobs used to take an extra fifteen minutes — is largely gone if you spec the right arm configuration.

On a properly configured lift, an oil pan gasket job goes from an hour to about thirty-five minutes including gasket prep and torque.
