An off-road and overlanding builder in southwest Iowa wanted a hydraulic lift automotive setup that could handle a 40-inch-tire crew-cab pickup with a rooftop tent already mounted — call it 8,400 lb loaded, 84 inches tall before the lift raised anything. This article is that case study, written with the builder’s permission and generalized for anyone shopping for a lift that has to work around metal fabrication, restoration, and full-vehicle uparmoring at the same time. The model number choice matters more than the price tag when the vehicle spec is unusual.

The vehicle spec that drove the hydraulic lift automotive model comparison

The southwest Iowa off-road builder’s vehicle was a modified crew-cab pickup with 40-inch tires, a full winch bumper, a roof rack tent, and a bed rack. Loaded weight with fuel and gear ran roughly 8,400 lb. Height with the roof tent deployed was 87 inches; folded, 78 inches. Wheelbase was 156 inches. The builder needed a hydraulic lift automotive setup that could handle that spec plus other customer vehicles in the same weight class — Ford F-250 Tremor builds, Chevrolet ZR2 Bison conversions, Ram Power Wagon uparmoring.

The requirement list included 10,000 lb minimum capacity for margin, arm reach long enough to hit the frame pickup points on a 156-inch wheelbase without interfering with the front bumper hardware, safety cams strong enough for a static hold during full-day fabrication work, and a rise height that let a tall vehicle drive over any low welding rigs on the shop floor. We built the model comparison around those five requirements. Three lifts made the initial short list. Each had trade-offs, and the case study below walks through them the way we walked through them with the builder. A hydraulic lift automotive purchase for an off-road build shop is not a copy-paste of a body shop spec, and we do not treat it that way.

Option A: Rotary SPO12 versus the requirement list

Option A was the Rotary SPO12 — a 12,000 lb capacity asymmetric two-post with 79-inch rise. Capacity was well above the 8,400 lb target. Arm reach on the SPO12 covered the 156-inch wheelbase comfortably with the standard front-arm option, though we quoted the extended-arm upgrade to give clearance around the winch bumper hardware. Rise was tall enough that a folded roof tent cleared the overhead safety bar, but the deployed tent did not — which meant every vehicle had to have the tent folded before going up on the lift.

The builder was okay with that constraint. The Rotary SPO12 also carried ALI Gold certification, which mattered because the builder occasionally does contract restoration work for a museum and needed the certification for their insurance rider. Downsides of the SPO12: the price was the highest of the three options, and the column height would require a slight ceiling modification in the builder’s shop, which has 12-foot open joists. Not a deal-breaker but a real cost. The SPO12 was the safest technical choice, and if budget were unlimited, we would have quoted it as the pick. Option B: Challenger CL10 versus the requirement list

Option B was the Challenger CL10, a 10,000 lb capacity asymmetric two-post also carrying ALI Gold certification. Capacity was above the 8,400 lb target with a workable safety margin. Arm reach on the CL10 covered the 156-inch wheelbase with the long-arm configuration, and the winch bumper clearance was cleaner than on the SPO12 because the CL10 front arm has a slightly steeper swing arc. Rise was 74 inches, which handled the folded roof tent comfortably and matched the shop’s 12-foot ceiling without modification.

The Challenger CL10 also has a hydraulic hose management design we prefer for shops doing metal fabrication — the hoses run inside the column rather than across a shop where a stray weld spatter could damage them. The price came in below the Rotary SPO12 by a meaningful margin, and the CL10 fit the shop as-built without any ceiling work. Downsides were minimal. The 10,000 lb rating gave less headroom than the 12,000 lb rating on the SPO12, but with an 8,400 lb loaded vehicle, the margin was still 1,600 lb — enough. When we walked the builder through the trade-off between paying more for extra capacity margin and paying less for a lift that fit the shop, the CL10 started looking like the right pick. This is the option we ended up recommending in the final quote.

Option C: BendPak XPR-10AS versus the requirement list

Option C was the BendPak XPR-10AS, a 10,000 lb capacity asymmetric two-post more commonly sold into home garages and small commercial shops. Capacity matched the target. Arm reach covered the 156-inch wheelbase with the long-arm option. Rise was 76 inches, which cleared the folded roof tent and the 12-foot shop ceiling. The XPR-10AS carried ALI Gold certification, so it met the museum contract requirement. Price was the lowest of the three options — a real savings compared to the Rotary or Challenger.

The reason we did not ultimately recommend the BendPak was not the lift itself but the intended use case. BendPak XPR lifts are engineered for a duty cycle appropriate to a home garage or a moderate-volume commercial shop. An off-road build shop that runs a lift six to eight hours a day, six days a week, with heavy vehicles frequently on the arms, pushes the duty cycle harder than the XPR was optimized for. We would expect a shorter working life on the XPR at this shop compared to the Rotary or Challenger, which are engineered for continuous commercial duty. Not every hydraulic lift automotive purchase should be the cheapest lift that meets the spec.

Why we picked the middle option

Picking the Challenger CL10 as the middle option was the honest engineering call. It had enough capacity margin for the loaded 40-inch-tire builds, enough arm reach for the wheelbase, ALI Gold for the museum contract insurance rider, a duty cycle rated for commercial use, and a price meaningfully below the Rotary SPO12. It fit the shop as-built with no ceiling modification. The hose routing suited the metal-fabrication environment. The safety cams and arm restraints were the same commercial-grade components we install into dealership service bays.

The two-year hydraulic warranty and five-year structural warranty matched what we would want for a shop running six days a week. The CL10 was not the cheapest option on the table and it was not the most expensive. It was the right option for this shop. That is the framework we walk every hydraulic lift automotive customer through when the spec is unusual. Rank the requirements, compare the honest trade-offs, exclude the options that fit the spec but not the duty cycle, and pick the option that fits both. The southwest Iowa builder signed the CL10 quote the same week we sent it, and we scheduled install for three weeks out to line up with a break in his production calendar. The middle option was the right option.

Restoration and metal work implications for arm and column choice

Restoration and metal work shops put constraints on a hydraulic lift automotive setup that a routine service bay does not. Weld spatter, grinding sparks, and hot metal dust all end up somewhere in the shop environment. Hydraulic hoses exposed to weld spatter can burn through unexpectedly. Electrical cables running across a shop floor can catch on rolling toolboxes or trip a fabricator carrying a length of tube. Arm and column choice on a fabrication-heavy lift should include internal hose routing, sealed electrical junctions, and column bases that will not trap grinding dust.

The Challenger CL10 met all three criteria, which was one of the reasons we recommended it over the alternatives. We also spec a shorter-than-standard air hose kit for restoration shops because most fabricators run their air lines separately from the lift’s air-lock kit and do not want redundant hose spaghetti in the work zone. On paint booth-adjacent shops, we sometimes recommend an explosion-proof control panel upgrade — the southwest Iowa builder did not need it because his paint booth is a separate structure, but the option is available. Restoration and metal work environments demand a slightly different equipment package, and we build the quote around that. A lift that survives a decade in a shop that welds daily is a lift that was specified for that shop.

What install day looked like in southwest Iowa

Install day at the southwest Iowa off-road build shop took our crew about five hours from arrival to test-run. The shop’s slab was 6-inch commercial-grade concrete with heavy rebar — over-built for a two-post, which meant no core testing surprises and clean anchor sets. We set the columns, ran the hoses internally per Challenger’s spec, wired the power unit into a dedicated 220-volt circuit the shop had already run to the bay wall, filled the reservoir, cycled the lift empty, then cycled the builder’s loaded pickup up and down under full load three times to verify the safety cams engaged at every tooth.

The builder ran the lift the same afternoon on a customer’s ZR2 Bison for a suspension inspection. He called us that evening to say the arm swing hit exactly the pickup points he needed without touching the winch bumper — the exact clearance we had targeted at the quote stage. Twelve months later, the CL10 is running six days a week without a service call. That is what a hydraulic lift automotive install for a demanding shop should look like when the spec is right and the install is careful. Every case study we can point to came out that way because we walked through the specifics up front rather than treating the quote as a catalog transaction.
