An EV specialty shop owner in Waterloo emailed us last month asking whether his new hydraulic lift automotive setup could actually handle a Model X for oil-service on the reduction gearboxes. He’d been told by another dealer that battery packs made every existing lift obsolete. That’s not true. Most of what EV shops hear about lifts is either recycled myth or old-guard sales pitch. We install into EV-only shops across Iowa, and here are the six myths that need to die if you’re outfitting a bay for electric vehicle service.

Myth 1 — A Hydraulic Lift Automotive Setup Can’t Handle EV Weight
The claim is that EVs are too heavy for traditional lifts. This is false for the lifts we sell. A Model X weighs around 5,500 lbs. A F-150 Lightning tops out near 6,900. A 10,000-lb two-post lift eats both without breaking a sweat, and we routinely put 12,000-lb heavy-duty two-post lifts into EV-only shops running Lightnings and Rivians. Where the myth comes from: old asymmetric lifts rated at 7,000 lb, common in shops built in the 1990s, are legitimately undersized for heavy EVs. The fix is not to abandon hydraulic lift automotive equipment — it’s to buy a lift with modern capacity. Our Waterloo customer swapped his old 7,000-lb lift for a 12,000-lb Rotary SPO12 and is now clearing every EV that rolls through his door. The lift itself is the same technology it always was. The capacity number just has to match the vehicles.
Myth 2 — Battery Packs Make Every Two-Post Impossible
The truth is more nuanced. EV battery packs run the full width and length of the floorpan on most modern EVs, which means the traditional lift-arm pad points on a two-post lift need to hit reinforced pinch welds without touching the pack. Every major manufacturer publishes EV-specific lift-point diagrams for their vehicles, and every hydraulic lift automotive rig we sell can meet those points with the right adapter set. Rotary and Challenger both make EV lift-point adapters — flip-up pucks, stackers, and battery-clearance risers — that let you land on the correct pinch welds cleanly. What you cannot do is guess where to put the pads. Print the manufacturer diagram, keep it in the bay, and use the right adapters. Our Waterloo shop keeps a laminated Tesla lift-point sheet on the wall next to the lift, and they’ve done thousands of Model 3, S, and X services without an incident.
Myth 3 — Oil Changes Don’t Need a Lift Because EVs Don’t Have Oil
This one comes from marketing decks, not shop reality. Yes, EVs skip engine oil — but they still have reduction gearbox fluid, differential fluid on some models, brake fluid, coolant loops, and cabin/HVAC service points. Tesla Model X has a rear drive-unit gearbox that some independent shops service every 100,000 miles. Rivian recommends fluid checks on the front and rear gearboxes. Our Waterloo customer built his EV specialty shop around exactly this kind of fluid service, and he does more lift work per vehicle than a traditional oil-change shop does on ICE cars. A hydraulic lift automotive setup is still central to the workflow — the fluids just live in different places. If anything, EVs need more lift access, not less, because rotating an EV up to the roof for battery-cooling-loop bleeds is far easier from a lift than from the floor.
Myth 4 — Freight Delivery to a City Shop Is Automatic
You’d think Waterloo, being a real city with real freight terminals, means an LTL truck just rolls up to your bay. Sometimes yes, often no. City freight has its own hazards: no-truck streets, narrow alleys, delivery windows that block your customers, and shops that share a driveway with a residence. Before we ship a lift, we ask about the exact delivery approach. Two of our Waterloo installs required us to reroute to a nearby industrial park because the shop’s alley was too tight for a 53-foot trailer. We coordinate that up front. What we won’t do is quote you a low freight number and then surprise you with a re-delivery fee. Myth 5 — You Need a Forklift to Unload, or You’re Stuck
Most independent EV shops don’t have a forklift. That doesn’t mean unloading is impossible. Options: order liftgate delivery (adds cost but lands the pallet at ground level), rent a forklift for two hours from the local rental yard, or borrow a skidsteer with pallet forks from a neighboring business. Our Waterloo install used a rented Toyota electric forklift for ninety minutes on a Saturday morning — total cost was under a hundred dollars. The lift crate weighed 2,100 lbs. Once it’s on the shop floor, two people with a pallet jack move it to the install location. The myth that unloading requires industrial equipment is what stops city shops from ordering. It doesn’t. Plan the unload the same way you plan the install, and there’s always a workable path.
Myth 6 — The Lift Is the Expensive Part
For a well-run EV shop, the lift is often less than 20% of the total bay cost when you add electrical, install labor, EV-specific adapters, and lighting. The lift is a one-time capital purchase that runs 15 to 20 years with basic maintenance. What actually kills EV shop margins is buying the wrong lift the first time and having to replace it three years later when a heavier EV comes in. Spend an extra tier on capacity now. Our Waterloo customer’s original 7,000-lb lift lasted eight years; his new 12,000-lb hydraulic lift automotive rig will comfortably outlast his lease.
