A trailer and RV service shop east of Lincoln called us a couple of years back because they were losing inspection work they could not physically handle. They had jack stands, a pit that predated the current owner, and a lot of crawling around on creepers under bumper-pull trailers. The Problem: Inspections That Would Not Fit
Their volume was seasonal and heavy. Spring and fall brought a wave of annual inspections — brakes, bearings, suspension, frame, lighting, propane systems on the motorhome side. A lot of that work is underbody and a lot of it is repetitive, which is exactly the kind of work that either pays well or eats you alive depending on whether you can stand up while you do it. On a creeper, a bearing repack that should take forty minutes stretches past an hour, and the tech is worn out by two in the afternoon.
The pit made it worse, not better. It was narrow, it was not rated for anything modern, and it did nothing for a triple-axle gooseneck. So the real bottleneck was not skill or parts, it was access. They were turning away work in April because the calendar would not stretch, and every job they turned away went to a shop forty minutes up the interstate. When we walked the building, the fix was obvious to everybody in the room. They needed to get vehicles in the air, they needed long runways to handle trailer lengths, and they needed the capacity to do it with a loaded fifth-wheel on deck. What they did not have was clarity on which configuration, and that took a few conversations.
Choosing the Configuration for Trailers and RVs
For a shop like this, a four-post drive-on with extended runways was the right answer for most of the workload. You can pull a bumper-pull or a small travel trailer straight up onto the runways, chock it, and work standing. Add rolling bridge jacks and you get wheels-free access for bearings, brakes, and hub service without giving up the drive-on convenience. Capacity mattered — we specified well above the average loaded weight, because RV customers show up with water tanks full and a garage bay’s worth of gear inside.
The other half of the conversation was ceiling height and column height. RVs are tall. A class C with a roof AC unit eats clearance fast, and the shop had a fourteen-foot door but roughly sixteen and a half feet to the low steel. That put a hard ceiling on usable rise for anything tall, and it meant the four-post would be used at partial height for a good share of jobs. That is fine mechanically, but it changes how you spec — you want a unit whose lower lock positions are usable and well spaced, not one that only makes sense at full extension. Install Week: Slab, Power, and the Things That Slow a Job Down
Their slab was six inches and in good shape, which made the anchoring straightforward. A four-post is less demanding than a two-post in that respect because the load is distributed across four base plates, but you still want to know what you are drilling into. We core-tested in two spots before setting layout. The bigger issue was drainage — the floor sloped toward a center drain, which meant shimming the base plates to get the runways dead level. That is normal and it adds a couple of hours, but if you skip it the vehicle wants to roll and the locks engage unevenly.
Power was single-phase 220V on a dedicated 30-amp circuit with a disconnect within sight of the power unit. Their electrician had it terminated before we arrived, which is exactly how it should go. The one delay was freight: the runways ship long and heavy and the delivery driver could not get around to the back of the building, so we ended up staging the crates out front and moving them with their own forklift. Total time on site was a day and a half including commissioning, bleeding the cylinder, cycling the full travel, and testing under load with one of their own trailers.
Months One Through Six: Learning the Machine
The first few months were about habits. Techs who had spent a decade on creepers had to relearn workflow — where the tools go, how you stage a bearing job when everything is at chest height instead of face height, how to position a trailer so the tongue jack clears. Throughput on annual inspections roughly doubled within eight weeks, which is the number that justified the purchase. They also picked up work they had previously refused, because a triple-axle that used to be a two-day nightmare became a half-day job.
The maintenance habits took longer to stick. On a four-post, the equalizer cables are the component that decides whether your next decade is quiet or expensive. They stretch, they need periodic adjustment to keep the runways level, and the sheaves they ride over need to spin freely. We have run brand-new cable for shops only to have it fail early because a seized sheave was chewing it from the first day. We set them up with a monthly walkaround: check cable tension and condition, look at sheaves, check fluid level, cycle the locks, and look for weeping at the cylinder gland. That takes ten minutes. The First Real Service Call
Month nine, they called with a classic symptom: the lift went up fine but drifted down slowly with a trailer parked on it overnight. The pump sounded normal, no external puddle, nothing obviously wrong. That combination almost always means fluid is crossing internally rather than leaking out — either a cylinder seal that has failed so the piston bypasses, or a lowering valve that is not seating because a chip of contamination is holding it open a thousandth of an inch.
We see this constantly. One caller had a four-post whose ram was bypassing internally and had already ordered a seal kit; another had a lift where the lower valve was effectively stuck and the pump was doing nothing but making noise. In this shop’s case it was contamination in the lowering valve, and the underlying cause was fluid that had never been changed and a reservoir that had been topped off with whatever was on the shelf. We cleaned the valve, flushed the system, refilled with the correct fluid, and it has been fine since. The important part for a business owner is that this is a maintenance failure, not a design failure. What Actually Drives Trade-In and Resale Value
Back to the question they asked on day one. Automotive lifts hold value better than almost any other shop equipment, and the reasons are specific. First, brand. Rotary and Challenger command real money on the used market because parts availability is excellent decades out and buyers know it. Off-brand imports with no parts channel are worth close to scrap because nobody wants to inherit an orphan. Second, documentation. A binder with the install certification, annual inspection records, and receipts for cable and fluid changes can add a meaningful percentage to what a buyer will pay, because it converts an unknown into a known.
Third, configuration. Common capacities and common runway lengths sell. Odd-duck specs sit. Three-phase units sell for materially less than single-phase because the pool of buyers who can power them is small — something to remember when you buy, not just when you sell. Fourth, condition of the wear items. Cables, sheaves, locks, and cylinder seals are what a knowledgeable buyer inspects, and fresh ones justify a higher ask. Year One in Review, and What We Would Tell the Next Shop
Twelve months in, the eastern Nebraska shop was running inspections at roughly double their old pace, had added a service line they previously subcontracted out, and had one service call on the books. The owner’s summary was that the equipment was the easy part and the scheduling changes were the hard part, which matches what we hear from most shops that add capacity for the first time.

Buy more capacity and more runway than your current average job needs, because RV customers show up heavier and longer than you expect and you cannot add capacity later. Buy a brand with a parts channel, both for uptime now and for resale later. Get the electrical terminated before the install crew shows up. Build the ten-minute monthly inspection into somebody’s actual job description rather than hoping it happens. Keep the paperwork in a binder from day one, because it is worth real money at sale time and it is impossible to reconstruct.
