An RV and trailer service shop in southern Minnesota bought their first hydraulic lift automotive setup from us about fourteen months ago, and they let us follow the install through the first year of real service work. This is what actually happened. The shop had been doing exhaust and driveline work on Class A and Class C motorhomes on jack stands for years, and the owner finally decided the crew was too old and too slow to keep crawling under coaches on gravel. Why the RV shop chose a mobile column hydraulic lift automotive setup

Class A motorhomes are too long for a conventional two-post and too heavy in the rear for a light-duty four-post. The right answer for most RV service shops is a set of mobile columns, which are wheeled hydraulic posts you position under each axle of the coach. A set of four columns rated at 18,500 lb each gives you a 74,000 lb capacity that handles almost any Class A or C, and the columns roll out of the way when the coach leaves. Install week: what actually happened

Install took three days. Day one was the electrical upgrade and testing. Day two was the mobile column commissioning, which included calibrating each column’s ram travel and verifying that the wireless control synced properly. Day three was training the shop’s four techs on positioning, load balancing, and the emergency-descent procedure. The whole crew participated because on a mobile column setup, any tech who touches the controls needs to understand what they are doing.

The one hiccup was that the shop’s existing 100-amp subpanel was maxed out and needed to be upgraded to 200 amps to run all four columns simultaneously. That was a $2,800 line item we had flagged in the quote, so it did not surprise the owner. Time per exhaust job dropped by roughly 25 percent, according to the shop’s own job tickets. Time per driveline job dropped even more, because U-joint work requires access to two points and a comfortable stance.

The shop was cautious the first two weeks. The owner ran every job himself before letting the newer techs take the controls solo. That caution is exactly right, and we recommend it to every shop. Used mobile columns show up on the market occasionally, usually from a truck fleet that upgraded or a dealership that closed. Prices can be 40 to 55 percent of new. The catch is that used mobile columns often need major service — cylinder rebuilds, motor replacements, wireless control refreshes — and the total cost after refresh gets close to new pricing without the warranty.

For this shop, we ran the numbers both ways. A used set at roughly half the price of new, plus estimated service costs, plus a shortened remaining service life, came out to a break-even proposition. The owner decided the warranty and the parts pipeline on new columns were worth the difference. That is the right call for a shop expecting to hold the equipment 10 to 15 years. If the shop had a shorter time horizon or a specific short-term need, used could have made sense. We always run that calculation honestly.

Months three through six: the first real problems

At the four-month mark, one of the columns started dropping half an inch overnight. Classic cylinder bypass. We shipped a seal kit next day and the shop’s own tech installed it in an afternoon with our phone support. Total downtime for the column: under 24 hours. At the six-month mark, one of the wireless controllers stopped pairing reliably with its column, which turned out to be a low battery in the transmitter. Trivial fix, but it took the shop a call to us to diagnose because the error code did not match the actual issue.

These are exactly the kinds of first-year issues we tell shops to expect. Every hydraulic lift automotive kit has a break-in period where minor issues surface. What matters is response time on parts and phone diagnosis. We recommended annual fluid changes on the columns instead of every-other-year, and the shop adopted that schedule. Their techs now do the fluid changes themselves with our fluid and our filter kits.
