Speccing a hydraulic lift automotive column for a body shop is a spec-sheet exercise, and the model number on the crate matters more than a lot of foremen realize. Reading the model number on a hydraulic lift automotive column

A hydraulic lift automotive column’s model number is not marketing — it is a code. Rotary uses SPO for symmetric and SPOA for asymmetric two-posts, with a numeric capacity code and suffixes for column height, arm type, and options. Challenger uses CL for their commercial two-post family, with a numeric capacity, an X for extended height, and other letters for special arms. BendPak uses XPR for their extended-post series. Each letter and each digit tells you something about the column’s capability, and buying blind by list price without decoding it is how shops end up with the wrong lift for the work they do.

The foreman-level version of the decoding is this: capacity is the first number (10 for 10,000 lb, 12 for 12,000 lb), asymmetry is a letter (A for asymmetric, no letter for symmetric on Rotary), extended height is another letter (X on Challenger, EH on some Rotary models), and arm type is often a two-letter code at the end. Once you have those four data points, you can compare two lifts across brands on equal footing. Without them, you are trusting a sales rep to tell you which lift will hold a truck. SPOA10 vs CL10 — the 10,000-lb comparison

The Rotary SPOA10 and the Challenger CL10 are the two 10,000-lb asymmetric clearfloor lifts we compare more than any other pair for a southeast Iowa body shop. Both are 10K, both are asymmetric, both are clearfloor overhead-cable designs. The differences are in the arm geometry, the pad options, and the arm-restraint mechanism. Rotary’s arms swing to a slightly wider range and their gear-set restraint is a longtime industry standard. Challenger’s CL10 uses a similar gear-set restraint and their arm design tucks in a bit more tightly on the front end for lower-profile vehicles.

For a body shop doing wheel bearing service on the everyday mix — sedans, crossovers, half-ton pickups — either lift is a good hydraulic lift automotive choice. The pick usually comes down to price at the moment of purchase and to which brand you already have parts for. If your other bays run Rotary, keeping the parts inventory consistent matters. If your shop is greenfield, the Challenger CL10 is often a slightly better bargain on quote day. Stepping up to 12K — SPOA12 and CL12 comparisons

When a body shop’s mix includes 3/4-ton work trucks, heavier crew-cab SUVs, or the occasional dually, the 12,000-lb tier is the right call. The Rotary SPOA12 and the Challenger CL12 are the counterpart lifts at that capacity. Both use similar overhead-cable clearfloor designs, both have gear-set arm restraints, and both are built to the same operating standards. The extra 2,000 lb of capacity mostly buys you margin, not new capability, but it changes how the lift feels under a loaded truck — arms flex less, cables run less taut, and the whole column has more reserve when the tech is under it.

For wheel bearing service specifically, the 12K tier is where we start recommending it as the default for shops that do more than a couple bearing jobs a week. The reason is torque. Wheel-bearing service applies substantial rotational load to the pad through the arm, and a 12K column absorbs that load with more margin than a 10K. If you are shopping specifically for a hydraulic lift automotive column that will see high-torque work every day, buy the 12K and never think about it again. That is the buyer’s-guide summary for body shops in southeast Iowa doing steady structural work.

Extended height — when the X or EH suffix matters

The extended-height suffix on a lift model number is often the least understood option, and it is important for body shops that lift crossovers and taller SUVs. Standard-height two-posts run about 11 feet 6 inches to the top of the column. Extended-height columns run 12 feet or more. That difference does not affect the vehicle’s rise height directly — it affects the overhead cable beam, which sits on top of the columns. If your shop ceiling is 14 feet clear and you plan to lift a full-size SUV, extended-height gives you more headroom over the vehicle’s roof line at full lift.

Where this bites body shops is on lifted trucks and full-size vans. A crew-cab pickup with a mild lift on 33s can eat two or three inches of your working height envelope. If you did not spec extended-height columns, you may find your tech cannot stand comfortably at the bumper of a raised truck. This is not a wheel-bearing issue directly, but it becomes one when the tech has to work at a stoop for a full brake-and-bearing job. The extended-height suffix is a cheap upgrade at time of purchase, and one we recommend most body shops take without hesitation.

Arm packages — three-stage arms and telescoping fronts

Arm packages are another spec-sheet item worth reading. A three-stage arm has three telescoping sections and reaches a wider range of pad positions than a two-stage. Telescoping front arms with a shorter minimum length help you place pads on low sports cars and short-wheelbase vehicles. Both options add cost, but both change what your bay can do. For a body shop that primarily takes collision work, three-stage arms are a good default because a body-work vehicle mix is unpredictable — one day it is a sedan, the next it is a lifted pickup with modified suspension.

Every hydraulic lift automotive column we install for a body shop gets the three-stage arm option unless the shop tells us otherwise. The upgrade cost is modest and the capability gain is significant. On the front-arm side, we recommend the short-front option if your mix includes sports cars, older muscle cars, or any low-clearance vehicle. That is a shop-by-shop conversation, but on a spec sheet the code for it will be a two-letter arm-type suffix at the end of the model number. What the wheel-bearing workflow looks like on the two lifts

The wheel-bearing workflow on a properly specced hydraulic lift automotive column is straightforward. Vehicle rolls in, arms swing under the pinch welds or frame rails, lift raises to shoulder height, tech pulls wheels, hangs calipers, removes rotors, and hits the axle nut. On a 10K SPOA10 or CL10, that whole sequence takes about 15 minutes on a passenger car. On a 12K version of either lift, the process is identical — the extra capacity just makes the tech feel confident that the column is unbothered by the torque loads applied through the hub.

Where the workflow breaks is on shops that mix vehicle sizes without upgrading their arm package. A body shop that lifts a sedan and a lifted crew-cab on the same day needs a lift that can handle both. Three-stage arms cover that spread. Short front arms cover the sports-car end. Standard arms only work when your mix is unusually narrow. Read your model number, read your arm suffix, and match them to your mix.
