Overhead versus baseplate: the honest tradeoff

The most common question we get from border-area shops is whether to buy an overhead two-post with the equalizer crossbar up top or a baseplate model that routes cables through a floor-level cover. Both are valid. Overhead lifts give you a completely open floor, which matters for wheel bearing work when a tire cart or bearing puller needs to roll straight in from either side. The downside is ceiling: you need roughly 12 feet of clear stack above the arms, and older tire shops along US-63 and the Missouri line often have 10-foot lids or lower ductwork in the way.

Baseplate lifts move that equalizer cable and hose bundle to a low steel cover at the floor between the posts. You lose a couple inches of drive-through clearance and gain the ability to run under a nine-and-a-half-foot ceiling. For a hydraulic lift automotive shop that also handles jacked-up four-by-four alignment work, the baseplate is usually the honest answer. Neither is inherently safer — the ANSI/ALI rating and the operator matter far more than the layout. But if we are picking for a border-town alignment bay with older construction, we bias baseplate about six times out of ten and simply plan around the small floor obstacle underfoot.

Wheel bearing jobs are unusual on a lift. The tech spends most of the ticket with the vehicle at chest height, one wheel completely removed, and the hub loaded with lateral impact from a slide hammer or press. Those three numbers eliminate half the catalog immediately. Two-stage arms save a few dollars and box you in six months later. Pad height is the other quiet killer: if your lowest sports car has 3.5 inches of pinch-weld clearance and your pads sit at 4.25 inches at their lowest, you cannot lift that car without an adapter cup. Concrete, anchors, and the surprise most shops miss

The 4.25-inch, 3,000-PSI concrete slab that a two-post lift specification calls out is not the slab most older tire buildings actually have. We core-tested a shop just north of the Missouri line last spring where the sales floor read five inches but the alignment bay was poured separately and came back at 3.25. That is a hard no on a 12,000 lb lift without a re-pour or an engineered pad, and it is exactly the conversation we would rather have before the freight truck rolls than after the boxes are stacked in the bay.

We prefer three-quarter-inch anchors torqued in a fresh, blown-clean hole with the manufacturer’s specified embedment. If the slab is questionable, an epoxy anchor system is the fallback, and if the slab is genuinely too thin or too weak, the honest answer is a saw-cut, re-pour, and 28-day cure before the lift arrives. Nobody enjoys hearing that, but the alternative is a lift that shifts under load a year in. Ask your installer to bring a core drill or a Schmidt hammer to the site survey. If they refuse to check the slab, they are guessing with your business.

Daily and weekly safety checks that actually get done

A hydraulic lift automotive setup is only as safe as the five-minute inspection the first tech does at open. We hand every installed lift a laminated checklist because paper checklists in binders stop getting used by month three. The daily list is short: raise the empty lift to chest height, listen for uneven cable sound, verify both locks engage audibly when lowered onto them, check for oil on the floor under the power unit, and glance at the arm restraint teeth for chips or wear on any tooth face.

Weekly, we ask techs to grease the lift-arm pivots, wipe the cylinder rods clean of brake dust so the rod seals do not chew grit, and lower the lift fully to check the reservoir level. Once a quarter, run the lift to full height with no load and watch the columns for uneven rise — if one side leads by more than half an inch, the equalizer cables are out of tension and need adjustment. These are boring habits, and boring is what you want. Every failed lift we have ever pulled out had a maintenance log that stopped six months before the failure. A shop along the border that runs fifteen to twenty alignments a day cannot skip these checks.

Cable, cylinder, and hose service on a two-post

On a symmetrical or asymmetrical two-post, the equalizer cables are the wear item that gets ignored longest. Cables are rated for a decade of daily commercial use, but chemistry — road salt, brake cleaner, and the aluminum brake dust that settles inside the tower — cuts that in half. We inspect cables at year five and replace them proactively at year eight on any high-volume shop. A snapped cable does not usually drop a vehicle because the mechanical locks catch it, but it takes the lift out of service for the week or two it takes to get parts to a border-town shop.

Cylinder seal kits are the other predictable service. On most current-generation lifts you will see a slow drift-down at year seven or eight — the vehicle lowers a quarter inch overnight — and that is a rod seal wanting replacement, not a scrap-the-lift moment.
