Why Cylinder Seals Fail First on Tire-Rotation Garages

The Rebuild Sequence, Step by Step
Once the cylinder is off the lift and on our bench, the sequence is deliberate. First we cap and label every hose so nothing gets crossed on reassembly. Then we drain the cylinder into a marked pan so we can inspect the old fluid: metallic sparkle tells us the piston has been scrubbing, brown sludge tells us water contamination, black flecks tell us seal disintegration. Next comes gland removal, usually with a spanner wrench that fits the two crossed slots on the outer face. Some older imports use a threaded gland that has been in place fifteen years and will fight every quarter turn out.
Once the gland is out, we slide the rod-and-piston assembly free and inspect the tube ID under a bore light for pits, scoring, or the tell-tale spiral scratch of a piece of debris that rode the seal for months. The rod goes on a set of V-blocks with a dial indicator to check runout, and anything over 0.010 inch across twenty-four inches means the rod is bent and the cylinder gets scrapped. Old seals come off with a plastic pick, never a steel one, because a single ding in a seal groove will leak forever. Reassembly is the reverse, with clean fluid on every seal and torque on the gland to specification.

Replacement cylinders from Rotary or Challenger run in the mid-tier price range depending on the model, and the labor to swap one is about half the labor of a bench rebuild because there is no gland fight.
