Four-post lifts drive the vehicle up on ramps and lift the whole car with the wheels planted on the runways, which is great for storage and oil changes but requires accessory bridge jacks to lift the wheels off the ramps for brake work.

The four-post option makes sense when the homeowner also wants storage capability, meaning parking a second vehicle underneath a lifted car in a two-car garage that would otherwise only hold one.
