Anyone building tall overlanding rigs eventually runs the same problem — a hydraulic lift automotive 2-post with an overhead crossbar that hits the roof rack, the awning, or the rooftop tent every single time. We had a builder from western Illinois call us last spring about exactly that headache, a shop full of lifted 4Runners and half-cab Tacomas that couldn’t clear his existing overhead, and by the end of the summer we had him on a new baseplate configuration that changed his whole workflow. This piece walks through that real Iowa install as a case study, side-by-side with the overhead 2-post it replaced, so you can decide which configuration your own shop actually needs for wheel-bearing and drivetrain work.

The customer, the trucks, and the problem

The shop was a small overlanding builder just across the river in western Illinois, about two hours from us. He runs one bay, does two or three complete builds a year, and lives on wheel-bearing service, front-end rebuilds, and drivetrain work on lifted trucks. He had bought an entry-level overhead 2-post used from a closing shop in the Quad Cities, brought it home, and immediately discovered the overhead beam sat at exactly the height that every one of his customers’ roof tents wanted to occupy. He was pulling tents off in the parking lot before every service. Every time. It cost him about twenty minutes on each ticket, plus the risk of damaging a customer’s setup.

He called us to ask whether he should raise the ceiling. The answer was no. His shop is a converted pole barn with a 14-foot ceiling to the truss chord, and adding vertical clearance to a 2-post overhead means adding taller columns, which meant buying a new lift anyway. So the actual question was whether that new hydraulic lift automotive 2-post should be another overhead configuration with extended columns, or whether the right answer was a baseplate configuration that runs the equalizer bar across the floor instead of the ceiling. We drove over on a Saturday, measured everything, and gave him the honest recommendation.

What overhead configuration actually gets you

The classic overhead 2-post — Rotary SPOA10, Challenger CL10 series — puts the equalizer chain or cable and the shutoff bar up top in a horizontal crossbeam that spans between the two columns. That layout has three real advantages for most shops. First, nothing crosses the floor between the columns, so a snap-on cart or a floor jack rolls freely underneath the vehicle without hopping over a bar. Second, cable routing is cleaner and easier to service because everything is at chest height when the lift is at the middle of its travel. Third, the overhead limit switch reliably kills the lift before a tall roof hits a truss or a light fixture, protecting the ceiling.

For most car and light-truck work — brake service, oil changes, wheel bearing service on a factory-height Silverado — an overhead hydraulic lift automotive setup is the default, and that is why every dealership service bay we install in Iowa still gets overhead 2-posts. The problem shows up only when the truck under the arms is taller than the design assumed. A stock-height truck plus a rooftop tent is 90 inches or more before the lift even moves. That is where overhead runs out of runway, and it’s where baseplate starts to earn its keep for a specialty builder like our Illinois customer.

What baseplate configuration actually gets you

A baseplate 2-post — Rotary SPO10, Challenger baseplate variants — moves the crossmember to the floor between the columns and routes the equalizer cable or chain through a channel or under a diamond-plate cover. The columns themselves are usually shorter overall than the equivalent overhead model, because there is no ceiling beam eating vertical space. That means a truck can rise the full stroke of the cylinder without ever contacting anything overhead. In our western Illinois builder’s converted pole barn with a 14-foot ceiling, a baseplate 10K let him lift a fully built 4Runner with a rooftop tent to full working height with more than two feet of clearance to the trusses.

The trade-off is exactly what you would expect. That floor channel or diamond-plate cover means a low-clearance rolling cart can hang up crossing between the columns, and a floor jack has to be positioned around it instead of straight through. It is not a huge deal in practice, but it is a real workflow difference on every ticket. Baseplate configuration also puts the equalizer components on the floor, which means shop dirt, coolant spills, and brake dust all end up settling on the cables and the pulleys. Regular cleaning becomes part of the maintenance rhythm on any baseplate hydraulic lift automotive setup, or those cables will corrode faster than the same cables running overhead.

The install we actually did on the Illinois shop

We put in a Rotary SPO10 symmetric baseplate 2-post with 10,000-pound capacity, three-stage arms, screw pads, and truck adapters. Column height came in around 111 inches, which cleared his 14-foot ceiling easily and gave him room for future truss lighting. We spec’d 4.25-inch, 3,000 PSI reinforced concrete under both columns after coring two test plugs and confirming his existing slab was actually 4.5 inches with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers — better than most shops we visit. We ran a new 30-amp 208-volt single-phase circuit, mounted a power unit shelf on the driver-side column, and grouted the columns square to within an eighth of an inch.

The whole install took a full day plus a half day of final commissioning the next morning. He was lifting his own truck by lunchtime on day two, and he called us that Friday to say the workflow difference was more dramatic than he had expected — he had already saved probably three hours of tent-removal labor in his first week. That is a real cost delta on a small shop doing two or three builds a month. The right hydraulic lift automotive configuration paid for itself in his labor savings faster than either of us guessed on the phone call before the install.

Wheel bearing service specifically — why it changed on baseplate

Wheel bearing service on a lifted 4Runner or Tacoma is a knuckles-off job. You are pulling the caliper, the rotor, the CV axle nut, sometimes the CV shaft, and always the hub assembly. On his old overhead lift with the truck three feet lower than desirable because the tent hit the beam, he was working with the hub assembly at about knee height and craning his back sideways to see up into the knuckle. On the new baseplate, that same hub assembly sits at chest height when the lift is at working height, and he can put a droplight straight into the knuckle without contorting.

Time-per-job on front wheel bearings on lifted trucks dropped from around two and a half hours down to about ninety minutes on his tracking, plus better torque accuracy on the axle nut because he can actually see his torque wrench dial. That is the practical case for baseplate in a specialty overlanding shop — the ceiling constraint drove the configuration choice, but the ergonomic win on knee-to-chest-height work was the payoff he actually felt on every single ticket. A hydraulic lift automotive setup only earns its keep if it is at working height for the actual jobs the shop actually runs.

When we still recommend overhead instead

Baseplate is not the right answer for every shop. If you’re running a standard general-repair operation with mixed traffic — sedans, crossovers, half-ton pickups, the occasional 3/4-ton — and your ceiling is 12 feet or taller with no roof-rack customers in your book, overhead is still the better default. The floor stays clear. The equalizer components stay cleaner. The overhead limit switch protects your ceiling from a customer’s forgotten roof antenna. Every dealership 2-post install we did last quarter was overhead, and none of those installs should have been baseplate.

Where the calculus flips is exactly what we saw with our Illinois builder: tall vehicles in a low ceiling. That includes overlanding shops, off-road builders, ambulance and utility upfit shops, sprinter-van conversion outfits, and box-truck specialty operations. Parts, service, and follow-up on either configuration

Both configurations use the same hydraulic power unit, the same cylinders, the same seals, and the same electrical controls — the differences are geometric, not mechanical. That means our parts stock in Ames covers both. We keep power units, cylinders, seals, cables, chains, sheaves, and control boxes in stock for Rotary and Challenger 2-post lifts in both overhead and baseplate configurations, plus a working inventory of arm-restraint gears, pinch-weld pads, and truck adapters. Lead time on almost any 2-post part is same-day if we have it, or two to four business days if we have to pull from the manufacturer.

Service intervals are the same on both. Annual ANSI/ALI inspection, monthly management walk-around, daily operator check. The one specific baseplate note we give every customer is to keep the equalizer channel swept out. If you’re running a baseplate lift in a shop that does a lot of brake work, put wiping down the equalizer cover on the closing checklist every Friday. That single habit will add years to your cable life. Our Illinois customer built exactly that habit into his shop routine on the first Monday after install, and he has had zero cable issues in the fifteen months since we finished the project. That is the payoff of getting configuration right at the start.
