Nobody who calls us about a hydraulic lift automotive install for a heavy-duty truck shop wants marketing fluff — they want the numbers, and they want them broken down honestly. We spent this past January quoting a Waterloo customer on a new bay dedicated to engine oil pan gasket work on medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, and by the time the install was finished in March we had a clean line-by-line cost breakdown that we can now walk through publicly. This piece is that breakdown, from lift capacity selection through install labor, electrical, slab prep, and commissioning, so any HD truck shop owner in the Iowa corridor can plan their own bay with realistic numbers.

The customer, the trucks, and the specific workflow
The Waterloo customer runs a medium-duty and heavy-duty truck repair shop, mostly Cummins-powered Class 6 through Class 8 straight trucks and the occasional highway tractor. Engine oil pan gasket replacement is a bread-and-butter job for that shop — the ISB and ISL Cummins engines in that weight class need pan service every couple of hundred thousand miles, and pulling the pan requires either dropping the engine (nobody wants to do that) or getting the truck high enough to disconnect the front axle assembly. That second option needs a heavy-duty 2-post that will lift a loaded 26,000-pound GVWR straight truck to a working height where a tech can actually get under the front axle with confidence.
The old bay had a legacy 15,000-pound 2-post that was near the end of its service life and did not have the capacity margin for anything above a Class 5. Every Class 6 and up came in on the neighboring shop’s mobile column lifts, which was a scheduling problem. The customer wanted a dedicated 30,000-pound in-ground-anchored 2-post in their own bay to eliminate the outside dependency. That is the specification the whole cost breakdown was built around: a hydraulic lift automotive 2-post with a real 30K capacity, arms reaching properly under a medium-duty truck’s frame, in a single dedicated bay.
The lift itself — capacity, brand, and options
We spec’d a Rotary SPO30 30,000-pound-capacity heavy-duty 2-post with extended-height columns, symmetric arms, screw-up frame adapters rated for the heavy-duty truck frame width, and an upgraded hydraulic power unit with a documented duty cycle appropriate for daily commercial use. Column height came in around 152 inches, drive-through clearance around 120 inches, arm reach adjustable to accommodate the wide range of frame widths between a medium-duty box truck and a heavy-duty tractor. Total lift cost — including the extended columns, the heavy-duty arm option, the ALI-required accessories package, and the upgraded power unit — landed in the mid-tier five-figure range for the equipment alone. That is significantly more than a general-repair 2-post but appropriate for a lift that will hold a 26,000-pound loaded truck safely every working day for twenty years. When you break the equipment cost across an expected two-decade service life, it comes out to a very small daily cost per operating day, which is the way any hydraulic lift automotive investment should really be evaluated on a heavy-duty commercial job.
Slab prep — the biggest single variable
The existing bay slab had been poured in 1998 during a shop expansion. Coring revealed 6 inches of concrete testing at 3,500 PSI, with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers — better than we sometimes see, but the Rotary SPO30 install manual calls for 8 inches minimum of 4,000 PSI concrete with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers. That meant a saw-cut and repour of a full 8-foot by 12-foot pad centered on the planned lift footprint, tied into the existing slab with epoxy-set dowels around the perimeter. Concrete removal and disposal, forming, rebar, pour, and cure came to roughly the same order of magnitude as the lift equipment itself.
That is a real number that surprises a lot of HD truck shop owners. For a heavy-duty hydraulic lift automotive install, slab prep can easily equal or exceed the cost of the lift itself, especially on a retrofit into an existing shop. New construction with a properly spec’d slab from day one is dramatically cheaper because the concrete cost is amortized into the initial building. The Waterloo customer accepted the retrofit slab number because his alternative — moving to a new building — was orders of magnitude more expensive. Once the slab was in place, the rest of the install went smoothly, but the slab cost is the number every retrofit customer needs to plan for honestly at the outset.
Electrical and hydraulic connection
The 30K SPO30 power unit runs on 208-volt three-phase in the configuration we chose. That required a dedicated three-phase feeder from the shop’s existing panel, a disconnect at the lift, and a control station at the operator position with the appropriate motor starter and overload protection. The customer’s shop already had three-phase service to the panel for other equipment, so the incremental cost was just the feeder run, the disconnect, the starter, and the labor to pull wire and terminate everything. Electrical came in at a couple of thousand dollars including the licensed electrician’s time.
Hydraulic connection on a 2-post is dead simple compared to some other equipment — the power unit ships pre-plumbed for the columns, and the field connection is a pair of hoses from the power unit to each column with the appropriate fittings and a fluid fill. Hydraulic fluid is included with the lift. Total hydraulic labor at install was under an hour once the power unit was mounted. That is one of the reasons a 2-post hydraulic lift automotive setup is a favorite in HD truck shops — the mechanical complexity is low, the parts are proven, and there is nothing exotic in the fluid path that a truck mechanic can’t understand from first principles. That familiarity matters when the shop staff eventually does its own routine service.
Install labor and commissioning
Once the slab was cured (a full 28 days after pour, which we insisted on even though the customer was eager to start using the bay), the mechanical install took two full days plus a half day of commissioning. Day one was setting the columns, plumbing the hydraulic lines, mounting the power unit, and running the electrical. Day two was installing the arms, adapters, and safety equipment, plus initial cycling under no load to verify smooth operation. Half day three was load testing with the customer’s own trucks, first at partial load and then at full-rated capacity, with our tech watching every anchor and every hydraulic connection for any leak or movement.
Install labor cost for our crew came in at a mid-four-figure number for the full install, including the electrical subcontractor coordination. We do not sub-out the mechanical work — our own techs do every 2-post install we sell in the Midwest — and we include a full year of warranty labor on the install itself in every quote. The commissioning report is a written document listing every torque check, every fluid fill, and every load test performed, and it goes into the customer’s binder alongside the ANSI/ALI documentation. That paperwork is what an insurance auditor or a state inspector wants to see, and it is included with every hydraulic lift automotive install we do.
Total cost, and how to plan for your own
Adding up the lift equipment, the slab repour, the electrical work, the install labor, and the incidental commissioning items, the Waterloo customer’s total project came in near the low end of the six-figure range, all-in. That is a real number for a real 30,000-pound-capacity dedicated HD truck bay in a retrofit shop, and it is dramatically higher than the equivalent number for a general-repair 10K 2-post install because everything scales — the lift, the slab, the electrical, and the labor. What matters for any HD truck shop planning their own install is that the equipment cost is roughly one-third to one-half of the total, and slab work often equals the equipment.

Ongoing service on a heavy-duty commercial 2-post
A 30K commercial 2-post in a daily HD truck bay gets more service attention than the general-repair equivalent, and rightly so. Our service plan on the Waterloo customer includes twice-yearly on-site inspections with full anchor re-torque, hydraulic system testing, cable and cylinder condition checks, and written ANSI/ALI documentation. Between visits, the shop staff runs a monthly walk-around using our written checklist, and any developing issue is a phone call away from same-day parts response out of Ames.
The reason we push twice-yearly on HD commercial is that the load cycles are so much heavier than a general-repair bay, and small developing issues escalate faster under heavy load. A tiny hydraulic seep on a 10K lifting a Corolla is a slow problem; the same tiny seep on a 30K lifting a Class 8 tractor is a much faster problem because the pressures involved are so much higher. Catching it at six months instead of twelve months makes a real difference.
