What a Hydraulic Lift Cylinder Actually Does
On a two-post car lift, the hydraulic lift cylinder is the muscle that pushes both carriages up the columns. Fluid enters the base, pressure builds against the rod seal, and the piston extends — usually seventy to eighty inches of usable stroke, depending on the lift model. On a four-post, the cylinder pulls a set of cables that raise the runways. Either way, that single component carries the weight of the vehicle and does thousands of cycles between rebuilds.
When it fails, you’ll see one of three things: fluid pooling under the column, a lift that drifts down over a shift, or a lift that won’t rise at all under load. Each symptom points at a different failure mode. Rod seal weeping is the easiest fix; barrel scoring is the worst; a stuck piston sits somewhere between. We diagnose over the phone with a couple of photos, or we send a tech from our Ames shop to the surrounding Iowa metro when the customer wants an on-site look before ordering.
Rebuild or Replace — Our Honest Framework
The rebuild-versus-replace question comes up on almost every hydraulic lift cylinder ticket. Our rule of thumb: if the barrel bore is clean, the rod is not pitted or bent, and the mounting eyes are intact, rebuild. If any of those three fail inspection, replace. On older Rotary SPOA88 lifts we see all the time, five cylinders in a batch will usually split three rebuild and two replace.
That’s a real dealership job we handled last year — a busy shop running twenty-plus SPOA88 lifts sent five cylinders in for triage. The three rebuilds saved them roughly the cost of one new cylinder each; the two replacements were the honest answer. On BendPak XPR-series lifts, the failure pattern is different — usually rod seal, rarely barrel — so those trend heavily toward rebuild. We don’t upsell replacements when a rebuild works, because we’d rather earn the next cable pair too.
Common Failure Points on the Cylinder
The rod seal fails first. It’s a wear item, cycled every time the lift raises and lowers, and after ten years it hardens and starts to weep. The next failure is the piston seal, which lets fluid bypass and causes the lift to drift down under load — usually noticed when a tech leaves a car up over lunch and finds it settled six inches. Third failure is the barrel itself: internal corrosion from moisture in the hydraulic fluid, or scoring from a nicked rod.
If you catch a hydraulic lift cylinder at the rod-seal stage, a rebuild kit runs a couple hundred dollars in parts and about two hours of labor. Wait until the barrel is scored and you’re buying new. That’s why we push oil analysis and fluid changes as preventive maintenance — a fifty-dollar hydraulic fluid change every three years extends cylinder life by a factor of two or three, especially in shops that see a lot of humidity swings.
Cylinders for Two-Post Versus Four-Post Lifts
Not all lift cylinders are interchangeable. Two-post lifts run one cylinder per column on symmetric designs and a single cross-cylinder on some asymmetric models. Four-post lifts use one cylinder in the flat drive-on style, pulling cables through sheaves to raise the runways evenly. Mid-rise and scissor lifts run two shorter, higher-flow cylinders under the platform.

Every shop develops a feel for when a cylinder is on borrowed time. The early signs: a small fluid ring on the floor under the column each morning, a slight jerk when the lift catches its lock, or a lift that takes noticeably longer to reach full height than it did last year. Those symptoms don’t ground the lift, but they’re the polite warning before the loud one.
The late signs are harder to miss: a puddle under the column, uneven column travel, or the lift refusing to raise a heavy truck.
