Check the pads — worn or missing rubber puts steel against a pinch weld and that damage bills back to you. Glance at the floor under the power unit and the cylinders. Any fresh oil is information. A dime-sized spot is a weeping fitting; a puddle is a seal on its way out.

Then use your ears. Run the lift to full height empty and listen for the locks. On a two-post you want to hear crisp clicks marching up both columns at roughly the same pace. If one side is quiet or lagging, stop and call. Lower it under load and watch for drift or a slow sink after the pump shuts off. On four-post lifts, walk all four cables end to end with a rag in your hand — a snag on the rag finds a broken strand faster than your eye does.
