Step One: Confirm It’s Actually Power, Not the Lift

Before you open a single access panel, rule out the boring stuff. Check that the unit is plugged in, the breaker hasn’t tripped, and the disconnect switch on the wall (if your shop has one) is actually in the “on” position. We’ve been called out on emergency service tickets more than once where the fix was flipping a breaker that got bumped by a rolling toolbox. This is the fastest, cheapest step in any hydraulic lift wont raise diagnostic checklist, and skipping it wastes everyone’s time.

Next, listen for the motor. If you press up and hear the motor humming or straining but the platform doesn’t move, that’s a very different problem than total silence. A humming motor with no lift movement usually points to a hydraulic-side issue — low fluid, a stuck valve, or a bad pump. Total silence points to an electrical issue — a dead motor, a bad relay, a tripped thermal overload inside the motor housing, or a wiring fault. Write down which one you’re dealing with before you go further, because it changes everything downstream. Most misdiagnoses happen because someone assumes it’s hydraulic when it’s actually electrical, and they end up draining fluid or swapping a pump that was never the issue in the first place.

Check the Fluid Level First

Low hydraulic fluid is the single most common reason a lift won’t raise, and it’s the easiest thing to check. Open the power unit reservoir and look at the fluid level against the marked line or dipstick. If it’s low, that alone can explain the pump running but the platform not moving — the pump is sucking air instead of fluid. Top it off with the fluid type specified by your lift manufacturer (never substitute automotive brake fluid or random hydraulic oil) and try it again.

If the reservoir was low, also ask why. A slow drip from a cylinder seal, a loose fitting, or a worn hose can drain a reservoir over months without anyone noticing until the day it finally won’t lift. Look under the lift and around every fitting for wet spots or old fluid staining on the concrete. Topping off fluid without finding the leak just buys you a few more weeks before you’re back here again. This is one of the most overlooked steps in any hydraulic lift wont raise diagnostic checklist, and it’s the one that saves the most money when caught early.

Inspect the Lowering Valve and Release Cable

On two-post and four-post lifts, the lowering valve is a small but critical part that sometimes gets stuck partially open. If it’s not fully seated, fluid pumped up by the motor just bleeds right back down through the valve, and the platform never gains height even though the pump is clearly running. This is especially common on lifts with a mechanical lowering cable — if that cable is slightly out of adjustment or has stretched over time, it can hold the valve open just enough to prevent any pressure buildup.

Check the cable for slack and make sure the lowering handle returns fully to its resting position with no drag. On older lifts, the cable housing itself can corrode or kink internally, which keeps tension on the valve even when the handle looks fine from the outside. We see this constantly on lifts that are eight-plus years old and have never had the cable replaced. It’s a low-cost part, and swapping it resolves a surprising number of “the lift won’t raise” calls we get across Iowa shops every month.

Look at the Check Valve and Pump Assembly

If fluid level is good and the lowering valve checks out, the next suspect is the check valve inside the power unit, which is supposed to prevent fluid from flowing backward once it’s pumped up into the cylinder. A worn or debris-jammed check valve lets fluid slip back down as fast as the pump pushes it up, so you get motor noise and maybe a slight shudder but no real lift. This part sits right at the pump outlet and is a common failure point on units that have been in service for many years without a fluid change.

While you’re in there, also inspect the pump gears or vanes for wear if you’re comfortable opening the unit, and check the filter or strainer inside the reservoir for clogging. A clogged strainer starves the pump the same way low fluid does. Metal shavings or dark, burnt-smelling fluid are signs the pump itself is failing internally and probably needs replacement rather than repair. Catching this early in the checklist saves you from replacing good parts around a bad pump.

Rule Out Cylinder and Seal Failure

If everything upstream of the cylinder looks fine — fluid, valve, pump — but the platform still won’t rise, the cylinder itself may have failed internally. A worn piston seal lets fluid bypass inside the cylinder instead of building pressure to push the ram up. You’ll sometimes notice the platform rising a few inches and then stalling, or rising very slowly under load and dropping fast when weight is added, both signs of internal bypass.

External leaks around the cylinder rod are easier to spot — look for fluid weeping from the rod seal at the top of the cylinder housing. Internal bypass is harder to see and usually requires pulling the cylinder for inspection or replacement. On older lifts, especially ones that have sat with fluid contaminated by moisture or debris, cylinder wear is common and often the final piece of the puzzle once the easier checks are exhausted.

Electrical Faults That Mimic Hydraulic Problems

Not every “won’t raise” complaint is hydraulic. A weak or failing motor start capacitor can cause the motor to hum without generating enough torque to run the pump properly, which looks and sounds a lot like a hydraulic restriction. Loose wiring connections at the motor terminals, a worn relay, or a foot switch with worn internal contacts can all cause intermittent or total failure to raise even though every hydraulic component is fine.

If you’re getting inconsistent results — sometimes it raises, sometimes it doesn’t — suspect electrical before hydraulic, since hydraulic failures tend to be more consistent and repeatable. Check for loose ground connections too, since a poor ground can cause erratic motor behavior that’s easy to mistake for a mechanical fault. When to Call for Professional Service
