An in-ground auto lift is a different animal than a surface-mounted lift the day the concrete gets poured, and it’s a different animal again a year later when you’re calling for the first service visit. We watched this play out with an RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa that put one in mainly for tire rotation and wheel work on rigs that are too tall and too heavy for a standard bay. This is the story of that first year, told in order, with the electrical and phasing questions that came up along the way — because almost nobody asks about circuits and phase requirements before the lift shows up, and almost everybody asks about them within the first month.

Why This Shop Chose an In-Ground Auto Lift Over a Surface Lift

The shop’s problem was simple: RVs and trailers are long, tall, and heavy, and a lot of two-post surface lifts either can’t clear the height or can’t safely arm up under a chassis that isn’t shaped like a car. An in-ground auto lift sits flush with the shop floor, which meant techs could walk RVs and trailers straight over the platform without worrying about drive-up ramps, arm clearance, or a unit rocking on runways. For wheel and tire work specifically, that flush deck also meant they could roll tool carts and tire machines right up next to the vehicle without a ramp in the way.

They also liked that an in-ground lift keeps the bay usable for other things when it’s not raised — no permanent posts or runways taking up floor space between jobs. For a shop juggling walk-in tire work, scheduled service, and the occasional big rig that needs to just park inside, that flexibility mattered more than we initially expected. We talked through surface options with them first, mostly because the pit and plumbing work is a bigger project than a bolt-down two-post, but once we walked through the daily use case, the in-ground auto lift was the clear fit.

The Electrical Circuit Conversation Nobody Has Early Enough

Here’s where most first-time buyers get surprised. An in-ground auto lift with a hydraulic power unit isn’t a plug-and-play appliance — it needs a dedicated circuit sized to the motor, and depending on the unit, that can mean single-phase or three-phase power. This shop’s building had single-phase service throughout, which is common in older rural shops across southwest Iowa, and the lift they wanted to run more comfortably on three-phase for smoother, more efficient motor performance under repeated heavy cycling.

We worked through the options with them before the lift ever arrived: run it on single-phase with a slightly larger motor and accept a bit more amperage draw, or bring in a phase converter, or have their electrician quote a three-phase drop if the utility could support it. They ended up going with a single-phase configuration rated for their motor size, because a three-phase drop would have meant a utility upgrade that didn’t pencil out for one lift. The lesson we tell every shop now: get your electrician on the phone before you order an in-ground auto lift, not after it’s sitting on your dock. Circuit size, breaker rating, and phase availability should be locked in during the quote stage.

Install Day: What Actually Happened in the Pit

The pit had been poured and cured well ahead of delivery, which saved a lot of headaches. Our crew set the cylinder, ran the hydraulic lines, and squared the platform before backfilling and finishing the surrounding concrete. For an in-ground auto lift, the alignment during this stage matters more than people expect — if the cylinder isn’t plumb and the platform isn’t level, you’ll fight it for the life of the lift with binding, uneven rise, or premature seal wear.

We also ran conduit for the electrical hookup during this same visit, coordinating with the shop’s electrician so the final tie-in could happen without tearing anything back open. Once the concrete around the housing cured, we powered it up, cycled it empty a dozen times to bleed air from the hydraulic circuit, then loaded it with a trailer axle for a full-weight test. Total install-to-operational time was about two working days once the pit itself was ready, which is fairly typical for this class of lift when the site prep is done right the first time.

First Three Months: Tire Rotation and Wheel Work in Practice

For daily tire rotation and wheel work, the flush deck of the in-ground lift changed the shop’s workflow more than the owner expected. Techs could roll a tire machine and impact carts directly alongside the vehicle without stepping over runways or arms, and there was no ramp-up time before starting a wheel job. On RVs and trailers with dual rear axles, having full access underneath without wheel-well obstruction cut real time off each rotation.

The shop also noted fewer safety near-misses in daily use, since there was no elevated platform edge for someone to trip on when the lift was down. A couple of adjustments came up in the first few weeks — mostly operator habits around cycling speed and making sure the safety locks engaged fully before anyone went underneath — but nothing related to the lift itself. Those first three months are really where a shop learns the rhythm of an in-ground auto lift versus a surface lift, and for high-volume wheel work, that rhythm paid off quickly.

The First Service Call and What It Told Us

Around month ten, the shop called about a slow descent issue — the platform was creeping down a few inches overnight instead of holding position. That’s a classic sign of a small internal leak or a seal starting to wear, and with an in-ground auto lift the diagnostic process is different than with a surface unit because you’re troubleshooting a sealed cylinder in a pit rather than an exposed post. We checked fluid levels, inspected the packing, and traced it to a seal that needed replacing — a routine wear item on any hydraulic lift, in-ground or not, especially one running daily cycles.

We carry seal kits for most in-ground platforms specifically because this is such a common first-year call, and we quoted the shop before the visit so there were no surprises. The repair took a single visit. What that first service call really confirmed for the shop’s owner was that having a local installer who also stocks parts and handles repairs mattered — a lift shipped from out of state with no regional support would have meant a much longer wait for that same seal kit.

Freight, Site Prep, and Site-Specific Costs Nobody Puts in the Brochure

Beyond the unit price, this shop’s project included concrete work, electrical conduit and tie-in, and coordination between three separate trades — us, their electrician, and their concrete contractor. None of that shows up in a lift’s spec sheet, but it’s real cost and real scheduling that every shop considering an in-ground auto lift needs to plan for up front. We walk every customer through this during the quote stage now, precisely because of how many first-time buyers assume the lift price is the whole project price.

Site conditions also matter more with an in-ground unit than a surface one. Groundwater level, soil type, and existing floor drains all affect how the pit gets built and sealed. Southwest Iowa’s clay-heavy soil in some areas requires extra attention to drainage around the housing so water doesn’t collect and accelerate corrosion. We assess this on every site visit before quoting, because a lift that’s perfect on paper can become a maintenance headache within a year if the pit wasn’t built for local ground conditions.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Considering One Now

A year in, this shop would make the same choice again — the in-ground auto lift fits their workflow for RV and trailer tire and wheel work better than a surface lift would have, and the flush deck alone justified the extra install complexity. But their honest feedback, and ours, is that the electrical planning and pit prep deserve as much attention as picking the lift model itself.
