Step One: What’s Your Real Budget, Not Your Wish-List Budget

Every decision tree starts with money, and inground lifts sit at a different price tier than surface 2-posts because you’re paying for excavation, a cylinder or piston assembly, and often a contractor to break and repour concrete. A restoration shop doing oil changes and fluid service on classic cars doesn’t need the biggest single-post platform on the market — you need enough lift capacity to handle your heaviest project car with margin, and a footprint that matches your bay layout. We’ve seen shop owners budget for the lift itself and completely forget the site work, which is where costs actually balloon.

Before you commit, get a real number for the full job: lift hardware, cylinder, hydraulic lines, concrete work, and installation labor. If that number is more than double what a comparable 2-post would cost, ask yourself whether the clear-floor benefit is worth it for your specific shop. For a restoration bay where customers walk through and admire cars on display, it often is. For a high-volume service bay, a surface lift might get you there faster and cheaper.

Step Two: Check Your Water Table and Soil Before You Fall in Love With a Model

This is the step most people skip, and it’s the one that kills more inground car lift projects than any other factor. Iowa and western Illinois both have areas with high water tables, and if your shop sits in one, an inground cylinder installation can be a nonstarter without significant sleeve and drainage work. We always recommend a site survey before you pick a specific lift model, because the site determines what’s even possible, not the other way around.

A proper survey checks soil composition, existing utility lines, water table depth, and slab condition. If your building is older, there’s a real chance the original concrete isn’t documented anywhere, which means the survey also tells you whether you’re dealing with rebar, existing conduit, or an unknown void underneath. Skipping this step and ordering a lift first is how projects get delayed for months waiting on a fix nobody budgeted for.

Step Three: Match Cylinder Configuration to Your Actual Use Case

Once the site checks out, the next branch in the decision tree is configuration — single-piston, twin-piston, or a scissor-style inground unit. For a restoration shop focused on oil changes and fluid service rather than heavy structural work, a single or twin-cylinder setup usually covers the need without over-engineering the install. The key question is whether you need full clearance underneath for exhaust and undercarriage work, or whether you’re mostly accessing the car from the sides.

Twin-cylinder configurations spread the load and tend to hold alignment better over years of use, which matters if you’re lifting a variety of vehicle weights and wheelbases through a restoration shop’s rotating inventory. Single-cylinder setups cost less and install faster, but they demand a straighter, more predictable use pattern. Tell your installer exactly what kinds of cars come through your bay — low-slung classics, trucks, or a mix — because that changes which configuration actually makes sense.

Step Four: Decide Between New Install and Retrofit

Not every inground car lift project is a from-scratch install. Some shops are replacing an aging inground unit that’s failing — we get calls regularly about an inground lift that won’t go all the way down, stopping short of the bottom because of a worn cylinder or a seal issue. Either way, get a technician to actually pull the unit and inspect it before assuming which category you’re in — guessing here wastes money in both directions.

Step Five: Plan Around Your Concrete Thickness and Age

Concrete thickness and age are non-negotiable inputs to this decision tree. Most inground installations need a minimum slab thickness, and if your existing floor doesn’t meet it, you’re looking at a repour before the lift ever goes in. Restoration shops in older buildings — especially converted barns or older commercial spaces common in western Illinois — often discover their floor doesn’t meet spec once the survey happens.

This is also where you decide whether to install in a new bay you’re building versus retrofitting an existing one. New construction gives you total control over slab spec, rebar placement, and drainage, which makes the inground car lift installation dramatically simpler and often cheaper in the long run. Depending on mix and weather, you may need a week or more before the bay is back in service, and rushing that step risks cracking or settling that shows up months later as alignment problems. Step Seven: Confirm Long-Term Parts and Service Support

The last branch in the decision tree is often the most overlooked: who services this thing in five years? Inground lifts have fewer installers than surface lifts nationally, and if you buy from someone without a real service network, you can end up stuck when a seal fails or a cylinder needs attention.
