The inground lift install process scares a lot of shop owners off before they even get a quote, and honestly, we understand why. Digging a hole in your concrete floor and burying hydraulic cylinders under it sounds riskier than bolting down a two-post. Step One: Site Evaluation and Soil Conditions

Every inground lift install process we run starts with a site visit, not a sales call. We need to know your water table depth, soil composition, and whether there’s existing plumbing, electrical conduit, or a buried tank anywhere near the proposed bay. Iowa’s frost line and clay-heavy soil in a lot of counties change how deep and how wide we need to dig, and they affect whether we recommend a single-cylinder or twin-cylinder configuration for your bay.

We also check your building’s age and slab thickness. Older shops sometimes have shallower footings than modern code calls for, and that changes the excavation plan. Skipping this step is how other companies end up hitting groundwater mid-dig or discovering a slab that can’t support the surrounding load after the cylinder sleeve goes in. Step Two: Permits and Utility Locates

Before any concrete gets cut, we pull the required permits and call for utility locates. This isn’t optional paperwork we skip to save time — it’s the single biggest liability point in the entire inground lift install process. Gas lines, water mains, and electrical runs under a shop floor don’t always show up on old blueprints, especially in buildings that have changed hands a few times. We coordinate locates directly so there’s no gap between when lines get marked and when we break ground.

Local jurisdictions across Iowa vary on inspection requirements for inground equipment, and we handle that coordination too. Some counties want a plumbing inspector to sign off on the drain line before backfill; others want structural sign-off on the cylinder housing. Step Three: Excavation and Cylinder Sleeve Placement

Once permits clear, we cut the slab and excavate to the specified depth for your chosen lift model. This is the most disruptive part of the inground lift install process for your shop’s daily operation, and we plan around it — usually scheduling excavation for a slower stretch or a weekend if your bay needs to stay usable. The cylinder sleeve gets set plumb and level, checked multiple times before anything gets backfilled, because a sleeve that’s even slightly off will cause binding and premature wear on the piston for the life of the lift.

We also run drain lines and conduit for hydraulic lines at this stage. Getting this wired and plumbed correctly now saves enormous headaches later — pulling up a cured slab to fix a drainage mistake is far more expensive than doing it right the first time.

Step Four: Backfill, Cure Time, and Concrete Work

After the sleeve and lines are set, we backfill with the correct compacted material — not just whatever spoil came out of the hole — and pour new concrete around the housing. Cure time matters here more than most people expect. Rushing this stage is one of the most common shortcuts we see other installers take, and it’s a direct path to a lift that settles unevenly within its first year. We give the pour the time it needs before moving to the next phase, even if that means the bay is out of service a bit longer.

We use concrete specs matched to the load rating of your lift, not just generic shop-floor mix. A 12,000 lb capacity inground unit needs a different surrounding slab than a light-duty passenger lift, and that distinction gets lost when installers treat every job the same.

Step Five: Cylinder, Hydraulics, and Platform Assembly

With the concrete cured, we install the cylinder, run hydraulic lines, and assemble the above-ground platform or arms depending on your lift style. This is where the inground lift install process starts looking like a finished piece of equipment instead of a construction site. We pressure-test the hydraulic system before final assembly to catch any seal or fitting issues while everything is still accessible.

We also align the platform to your specific vehicle mix — service bays running heavy trucks need different arm or platform geometry than a passenger-car detail bay. Getting this dialed in during assembly instead of after commissioning saves a callback down the road.

Step Six: Commissioning, Load Testing, and Certification

Every install we complete gets a full load test before we hand over the keys. We run the lift through its full range multiple times, check for smooth rise and descent, verify the safety locks engage properly, and confirm hydraulic pressure holds steady under rated load. If anything feels off — even slightly — we address it before we sign off, not after you’ve had a technician standing under a vehicle on it.
