The steel arms on a two-post lift do not touch the vehicle directly. Between the tip of each arm and the pinch weld, frame rail, or lift point sits a stack of lift arm adapter pads, and that stack is what actually carries the car. Getting the right pads under every corner is the difference between a safe, level lift and a slipped vehicle. This guide walks through the adapter and pad choices you have on any two-post lift, how the parts cross between brands, and when to replace them.

What Adapter Pads Do

Two-post lift arms end in a stub or receiver. On top of that receiver you build a small tower: a stackable riser or two if you need extra height, then a rubber or urethane contact pad that grips the vehicle. That whole assembly is what shops call lift arm adapter pads. The rubber pad protects the pinch weld or frame from being crushed by steel, and it provides the friction that keeps the vehicle from sliding as the arms take the load.

Frame Rail vs Pinch Weld vs Plastic Cladding

Older body-on-frame trucks and SUVs have exposed frame rails you can contact almost anywhere along their length, and a flat rubber pad on a short adapter usually does the job. Unibody cars have a designated pinch-weld lift point on each side, and those require a slotted pad that captures the flange so the sheet metal does not fold. Late-model vehicles with plastic rocker cladding need a taller adapter with a molded slot that reaches through the trim to the metal lift point without crushing the cladding. Matching the pad shape to the vehicle is the single most important step in every lift cycle.

Adapter Heights and Stack-Up

Adapters come in stackable heights, typically 3-inch and 6-inch risers, and can be combined to reach unusually tall lift points on lifted trucks or vans with running boards. Always confirm the total stack height stays inside the lift’s arm-tip capacity range and never exceeds the manufacturer’s recommended maximum. Overtowering the pad puts a lever arm on the receiver and can bend the arm tip over time. When you need more height, the correct answer is often frame-cradle or truck adapters engineered for the load, not a taller rubber tower.

Rubber Pads Are the Wear Item

The rubber (or urethane) contact pad is a consumable. It compresses, glazes, cracks around the edges, and eventually loses grip. A glazed pad will let a vehicle slip sideways under load, especially on wet or oily undercarriages. Inspect the top surface every shift; if you see cracks, chunks missing, oil saturation, or a hard, shiny surface, replace the pad. Rubber replacement pads are inexpensive and every set of lift arm adapter pads should be treated as a serviceable part rather than a lifetime fitting.

Cross-Brand Compatibility

The good news for shops that run mixed equipment is that most two-post lift arm receivers use similar diameters and heights, and many aftermarket lift arm adapter pads fit multiple brands. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Forward, Ammco, and other common two-post arms often share the same receiver ID, so a stackable adapter or a slotted pinch-weld pad from one brand may bolt straight onto another. Always measure the receiver ID and OD before ordering, and confirm the adapter stub diameter matches. Some heavy-duty and older arms use oddball sizes that need brand-specific parts.

Truck Adapters and Frame Cradles

Beyond the standard pad-and-riser stack, most manufacturers offer purpose-built truck adapters: taller frame cradles, drop-in truck saddles, and stackable extensions designed for full-size pickups, cargo vans, and light-duty commercial. If your shop lifts a lot of half-ton and larger trucks, a set of dedicated truck adapters is safer and faster than towering three risers under a small pad. Keep them on a wall rack next to the lift so techs use them by default.

When to Replace

Replace lift arm adapter pads as soon as the rubber shows visible cracking, chunking, or glazing; if the pad no longer sits square on the adapter; if the adapter itself is bent or mushroomed at the stub; or if the vehicle ever slipped, even slightly, on that pad. A slipped vehicle work-hardens the rubber and compromises the grip permanently. Do not try to salvage a pad that has slipped once. Also check the retaining pin or clip that holds the pad on the adapter; missing clips are how pads walk off in service.

Sourcing and Inventory

Because adapters and pads are consumables, keep spares on the shelf. A basic stock is two spare flat pads, two pinch-weld pads, and one 3-inch and one 6-inch riser per lift.
