This lift cable inspection guide comes out of a couple thousand service calls across Iowa, and it starts with the same thing almost every time: somebody notices one side of a two-post drifting down faster than the other, or hears a click that wasn’t there last month. Why cables are the part shops ignore longest

Every other wear item on a lift gives you a warning you can’t miss. A leaking cylinder puts oil on the floor. A worn lock latch makes a sound the whole shop hears. Cables do neither. They fail quietly, strand by strand, inside a channel or under a cover plate where nobody’s looking. We’ve pulled cables out of ten-year-old four-post lifts in Des Moines shops where the outer strands were flat as a ribbon from riding a worn sheave, and the shop had no idea because the lift still went up and down normally. That’s the part that makes people nervous once they understand it — a cable can lose a significant chunk of its strength and still operate the lift on a normal day.

The other reason cables get skipped is that people confuse them with the thing holding the car up. On a hydraulic two-post, the equalizer cables aren’t lifting the vehicle — the cylinders do that. The cables keep the two carriages level with each other. So when a cable stretches or a strand breaks, the first symptom is a level problem, not a drop. Shops adjust the cable tension, the lift levels back out, and everybody moves on without asking why it went out of level in the first place. That’s the moment this lift cable inspection guide is trying to interrupt. A cable that needed adjusting twice in one year is telling you something.

How often we tell Iowa shops to inspect

The published standard most manufacturers point to is a documented inspection at least annually by a qualified inspector, plus a daily operator check before use. That’s the floor, not the target. In our experience the right interval depends almost entirely on cycle count and environment. A three-bay independent in a small Iowa town that lifts maybe eight cars a day is a different animal from a tire and alignment shop running the same two-post forty times a shift. High-cycle equipment earns a quarterly walk-around whether the calendar says so or not.

Then there’s Iowa itself. Winter road salt is the single worst thing that happens to lift cables in this state, and it doesn’t matter how nice your shop is. Slush melts off a vehicle, runs down the runway or across the floor, and finds the low point — which on a lot of lifts is exactly where a cable turns around a sheave or passes through a floor channel. We’ve cut apart cables from northern Iowa shops that looked fine on the surface and were rust-welded solid in the core. If you’re in a salt-belt shop, we’d rather you look at the cables in March than wait for your annual in September. The seven things we physically look for

Broken wires come first. Run a gloved hand — never bare — slowly along the full accessible length of each cable. A broken strand snags. Manufacturers and the general wire-rope standards give you a count-based rejection criteria, but our practical rule for lift service is simpler: any broken wire on a lift cable means that cable set gets replaced, not repaired, not watched. Second is diameter loss. A caliper across the cable in a worn spot versus an unworn spot tells you whether the cable has been abraded or crushed. Third is corrosion, especially the red-brown bloom that pushes out between strands, which means the core is already gone.

Fourth is birdcaging and kinking — strands separating or a permanent bend from being pinched during install or by a dropped tool. Fifth is heat damage or discoloration, which shows up more than you’d think in shops that do welding near an open lift. Sixth is the sheaves and pulleys the cable rides on: a grooved, notched, or seized sheave will destroy a brand-new cable in months, so replacing cable without replacing a bad sheave is money thrown away. Seventh is the terminations — the swaged ends, the threaded rods, the nuts and the cotter pins. Loose or missing hardware at the end fitting is one of the most common findings on the lift cable inspection guide checklist we hand to shops.

What the lift is telling you before you ever look

Half of a good inspection happens from the control side. Raise the lift empty and watch both carriages leave the floor. Do they break away together? On a two-post with healthy equalizer cables and properly bled cylinders, they should. If one side leads by an inch or more consistently, you’ve either got a cable adjustment issue, a stretched cable, or a cylinder problem, and you need to know which before you touch a turnbuckle.

Listen next. A dry sheave chirps. A frayed cable makes a gritty ticking as the broken strand passes over the pulley — once you’ve heard it you never mistake it again. Then check the lock behavior: on many designs the equalizer cable is tied into the lock release or the anti-sway mechanism, so a slack cable shows up as locks that won’t set evenly or won’t release together. We had a call from a fleet shop in central Iowa where the complaint was “locks are sticking” and the actual cause was a cable that had stretched enough to hold one latch partially engaged. Nothing about that presented as a cable problem until we got the covers off, which is why a real lift cable inspection guide always starts with an operational test rather than a parts list. Documentation is the part that protects you

An inspection nobody wrote down didn’t happen — that’s how an insurance adjuster or an OSHA compliance officer sees it, and honestly that’s how we see it too. Every inspection should produce a dated record with the lift’s serial number, the inspector’s name, what was checked, what was found, and what was done about it. We hand shops a one-page form and tell them to keep it in a binder or a photo folder on the shop tablet. Which one doesn’t matter. Having it does.

The reason we push documentation harder than most suppliers is that we’ve been on the wrong end of it. After an incident, the first question is always about maintenance history, and “we check them all the time” is not an answer. A dated line saying “passenger side equalizer cable adjusted, no broken strands, sheaves free” is. It also gives you trend data — when you can look back and see the same cable getting adjusted every four months, the decision to replace stops being a judgment call and becomes obvious. Replacement: sets, not singles

When a cable fails inspection, replace the whole set. Always. A new cable next to a five-year-old cable creates a tension mismatch that puts the new one under uneven load, and you’ll be back in there. Cables from the same set also stretch at similar rates, which is what keeps a two-post tracking level over its life. We won’t sell a single equalizer cable for a two-post lift for that reason unless a shop is replacing one that was physically damaged on a brand-new install.

Fitment matters more than shops expect. Length, end fitting style, swage diameter, and thread pitch all vary by model year within the same brand — we’ve seen three different equalizer cable lengths on what the shop believed was “a Rotary SPO12.” The serial tag is the answer. After replacement, cycle the lift empty several times, re-check tension, then load-test it before it goes back into production. That final step is the one shops skip most, and it’s the one that catches an install error while the bay is still empty.

When to stop inspecting and call us

There’s a point where a lift cable inspection guide stops being useful and you need somebody with a truck. If you find broken strands and don’t have a documented replacement procedure for that model, stop. If the sheaves are grooved or the sheave pins are worn oval, stop. If the cable is seized in a channel and won’t move, stop — because forcing it usually damages the channel too. And if the lift is an older inground or a design where the cables aren’t fully accessible without partial disassembly, that’s a service call, not a Saturday project.
