A lift cable replacement schedule is the single cheapest piece of insurance a shop can buy, and it’s the one thing almost nobody writes down. We install and service lifts across Iowa out of our shop in Ames, and in fifteen years of crawling under columns and pulling covers off overhead assemblies, we have never once been handed a written cable schedule by a shop owner. What we get instead is a phone call after a cable snapped mid-lift, a technician standing there white-faced, and a vehicle sitting cocked on one side of the runway. Cables are consumable parts. They stretch, they fray, they corrode, and they eventually fail. The whole point of a schedule is to make that failure happen on your calendar instead of on a Tuesday afternoon with a customer’s truck in the air.

Why Time-Based Beats Gut-Feel Every Single Time

Most shops replace cables reactively. Something looks bad, somebody mentions it at the morning huddle, and three weeks later it either gets ordered or gets forgotten. That approach works right up until it doesn’t, and the failure mode on a cable is not gentle. On a two-post lift the equalizer cables keep the carriages synchronized; when one lets go, the loaded side drops until the mechanical safety catches, and everything on that vehicle shifts. On a four-post, the lifting cables are carrying the entire load, and a failure there is exactly as bad as it sounds.

A written schedule removes judgment from the equation. You don’t have to decide whether a cable looks bad enough — the calendar decides, and you replace on interval whether it looks rough or not. That’s how aviation and elevator maintenance have worked for decades, and lift cables are not fundamentally different hardware. The other benefit is budgeting. Shops that know a set of cables is coming due in Q3 can plan around it. Shops that don’t get surprised by an emergency order, expedited freight, and a bay sitting dead for two days. We would rather sell you cables in February on a planned order than airfreight them to you in July because your only alignment bay is down.

What a Realistic Interval Looks Like

There’s no single number that fits every shop, and anybody who gives you one flat answer is guessing. What we use as a starting point in the field: heavy commercial duty — a busy general repair or tire shop cycling a lift 15 to 30 times a day — plan on cable replacement somewhere in the three-to-five-year window. Moderate duty, like a dealership service bay that sees steady but not punishing use, often stretches to five to seven years. Light duty, meaning a municipal shop, a fleet garage that cycles a few times a day, or a serious home garage, can reasonably run seven to ten years.

Those brackets are the skeleton of your lift cable replacement schedule, not the whole thing. Environment moves the numbers hard. A lift sitting near an open bay door in a central Iowa winter, catching salt slurry off every vehicle that rolls in, will chew through cables faster than an identical lift twenty feet further inside the building. Same with wash bays, undercoating booths, and anywhere with standing humidity. We’ve pulled cables at four years that looked worse than cables we’ve pulled at nine. If your shop has any of those conditions, take the aggressive end of the bracket and don’t argue with yourself about it. The Inspection Cadence That Feeds the Schedule

A replacement interval without inspections is half a program. The schedule tells you when to replace; inspections tell you when to move that date up. We recommend a quick visual every day at open — thirty seconds, eyes on the visible cable runs, looking for anything obviously wrong — and a real hands-on inspection monthly.

The monthly one means gloves on and running your hand along the accessible cable length feeling for broken wires. A single broken strand snags a glove instantly, and that’s your signal. Check the sheaves at the same time: a sheave that’s grooved, seized, or wobbling will destroy a brand-new cable in months, so replacing cable without fixing the sheave is money set on fire. Look at the end fittings and the threaded adjusters for rust or elongation. Check the slack — if you’re re-tensioning equalizer cables more than twice a year, that cable has stretched past its useful life and no amount of adjustment is fixing it. Log every inspection on paper or in your shop management software with a date and initials. That log is what turns a vague intention into an actual lift cable replacement schedule, and it’s also what you hand an insurance adjuster or an OSHA inspector when they ask what your maintenance program looks like.

Two-Post Versus Four-Post: Different Cables, Different Rules

People lump all lift cables together and they shouldn’t. On a two-post, equalizer cables don’t lift the vehicle — the hydraulic cylinders do that — so the cables are synchronizing carriages under moderate tension. They still fail, and a failure still drops one side, but the loading is different. On a four-post, cables are structural. They’re carrying the load through a system of sheaves, and they see far more cumulative stress per cycle.

That difference should show up in your intervals. We generally build a tighter lift cable replacement schedule for four-post lifts than for two-posts in the same building doing the same volume. Four-post cables also tend to hide their wear better, because a lot of the run is inside the runways where nobody looks. That’s exactly where we find the worst corrosion — trapped moisture, no airflow, no visual inspection for eight years. If you own a four-post and have never pulled the runway covers, do it this month. Always Replace in Sets, Never One at a Time

This is the argument we have most often, and we lose it more than we’d like. A shop finds one bad cable, orders one cable, installs it next to three cables of the same age and the same mileage. Six months later the next one goes. Then the next. Now you’ve paid three service calls instead of one, plus three rounds of freight, plus three bays out of service.

Replace as a set. Every time. The cables on your lift have identical service histories, and if one has reached the end of its life the others are within weeks or months of the same place. Buying the full set also means matched stretch characteristics out of the box, which makes leveling and synchronization dramatically easier — mixing a new cable with three stretched ones means you’re chasing tension adjustments for the next month. It costs more on the invoice and less over five years, which is the only math that matters.

Documenting It So It Survives Staff Turnover

The best schedule in the world dies the day the guy who kept it in his head takes another job. We’ve walked into shops where nobody could tell us the age of the lift, let alone the cables, because the one person who knew retired. Write it down somewhere that isn’t a person’s memory.

What we ask customers to keep: lift make, model, serial number, install date, and a running list of every cable replacement with dates and part numbers. Tape a laminated card to each column with the install date and the next scheduled cable replacement written on it in marker. It costs nothing and it means any technician, any inspector, any new service manager can read the status of that lift in three seconds. Add the replacement dates to whatever calendar system your shop actually uses — if it lives in Google Calendar with a 90-day advance reminder, it’ll happen. If it lives on a clipboard in the parts room, it won’t. A documented lift cable replacement schedule also matters for resale; a used lift with a maintenance history is worth meaningfully more than an identical lift with none, and buyers notice.

Getting the Right Cables Without Guessing

Ordering cables is where a lot of well-intentioned schedules stall out. Cable part numbers vary by model, by production year, by column height, and sometimes by which factory built the thing. A cable that’s two inches long is worthless, and a cable with the wrong end fitting is worse than worthless because you’ll waste a service call discovering it. Get the serial tag. Photograph it. That single step eliminates most of the ordering problems we see.
