Start With Broken Wires, Because They Never Lie
Every cable inspection we do starts the same way: a rag wrapped loosely around the cable, pulled hand-over-hand along the accessible length while the lift is at rest on its locks. Broken wires snag the rag. You will feel them before you see them, and once you feel one you stop and look. A single broken wire strand is not automatically a condemnation, but it is the earliest and clearest of all lift cable replacement signs, and it tells you the cable has begun fatiguing internally where you cannot see.
The industry rule of thumb our techs use is straightforward. Any cable with three or more broken wires in a single lay length gets replaced. If you find broken wires on one cable, plan on replacing all of them. Cables on a given lift age together, share the same load history, and mismatched cable age is how you end up back under the lift six months later chasing another failure.
Rust Bleed, Pitting, and the Iowa Salt Problem
Iowa winters put more chloride on our vehicles than almost anywhere in the country, and that brine drips off undercarriages straight onto lift components. Surface rust on a cable is normal and cosmetic. What is not normal is rust bleed: reddish-brown staining weeping out from between the strands. That means corrosion is happening on the inner wires and the core, where you cannot inspect it and where the cable does most of its work.
Run your fingers along the cable. If it feels rough and gritty rather than smooth, if strands look flattened or pitted, or if the lay pattern has opened up so you can see daylight between wires, the cable is losing cross-sectional strength. We treat corrosion as one of the most underrated lift cable replacement signs because it does not look dramatic. A cable can lose a serious percentage of its rated capacity to internal corrosion while still looking like it just needs a wire brush.
The prevention side is simple and cheap. Wipe cables down twice a year and apply a light wire-rope lubricant, not chassis grease, which traps grit and turns the cable into a lapping compound. Once they stopped, the next set went five years and counting.
Slack, Uneven Lock Timing, and Carriage Drift
On a two-post lift, the equalizer cables do not lift the vehicle. The hydraulic cylinders do that. The cables keep both carriages at the same height. So the symptom you notice first is usually not a visible cable problem at all; it is behavior. One arm sits an inch lower than the other. The locks no longer click at the same instant on both columns. The carriage settles slightly after you set it on the locks.
Some of that is normal cable stretch, especially in the first year of a new install, and it is corrected by adjusting the equalizer nuts. But if you have run out of adjustment thread, or you re-tension it and it is out again in a month, the cable itself has stretched permanently and is on its way out. On four-post lifts the stakes are different because there the cables genuinely carry the load. Uneven runway height, a runway that dips under load, or a lift that will not sit level on its locks all point straight at cable condition. Do not shim your way around it.
Check the Swages, Thimbles, and Sheaves
Cable failures rarely start in the middle of a run. They start at the ends and at the sheaves, and those are the spots people skip. Look at every swage fitting for cracks, elongation, or a cable that has started to pull out of the sleeve. Look at the thimble for deformation. Check that the threaded rod end is straight and that the nuts have not been shimmed, stacked, or replaced with hardware-store hardware, which we find more often than we would like.
Then look at the sheaves themselves. A sheave that no longer spins freely will drag the cable across its groove instead of rolling it, and that abrades the outer strands in one concentrated stripe. A worn sheave groove with a sharp edge will do the same thing. If you find a cable with damage concentrated in one repeating spot rather than distributed along its length, the cable is a symptom and the sheave or bearing is the cause. Not every failure announces itself. A cable in a clean, climate-controlled shop that lifts six cars a day is living a very different life than one in an unheated pole barn that lifts forty. Keep a simple log. Date of install, date of each inspection, each time you adjusted tension, and how much thread was left. One more thing worth saying plainly: if your lift has no legible serial tag, no inspection history, and came with a building you bought, treat the cables as unknown and replace them. The cost of a cable set is small next to the cost of finding out the hard way.
What Replacement Actually Involves
A two-post equalizer cable job is usually a half-day for a tech who has done it before. The carriages have to be supported, the old cables routed out over the top sheaves and down through the columns, new cables fed through, and then the whole thing tensioned and re-timed so both locks engage together. Four-post cable replacement takes longer because there are four cables, the runways have to be cribbed, and the routing is more involved.
The part that goes wrong most often is ordering. Cable length, end fitting style, thread pitch, and thimble type vary between models and even between production years of the same model.
