We’ve watched shops across Iowa order cables based on “it’s about the same length as the old one” only to have it bind in the sheave or stretch out of spec within a few months. Why a Lift Cable Spec Guide Starts With Diameter

Diameter is the first number in any lift cable spec guide, and it’s the one most people eyeball wrong. Most two-post lift cables run between 5/16 inch and 3/8 inch, but a difference of even 1/32 inch changes how the cable seats in the sheave groove and how it wraps around the drum or equalizer. A cable that’s slightly undersized will saw against the sheave walls and wear a groove into itself long before it should fail on paper. Oversized cables can jump the sheave entirely under load, which is a dangerous failure mode we don’t want any Iowa shop dealing with.

We measure diameter with calipers across the outer wires, not with a tape measure eyeballed against the old cable, because rope diameter is measured differently than most people assume. When a customer calls us with just “it’s about 3/8,” we ask for the lift’s model and serial number instead, since the manufacturer’s parts breakdown is more reliable than a field measurement on a worn cable that’s already stretched thin. That’s the fastest way to get an exact match without shipping a cable back and forth twice.

Length and Reeving Matter as Much as Diameter

Cable length is where a lot of orders go wrong even when diameter is right. Two-post lifts often use two or three different cable lengths on the same unit — one for the front, one for the rear, sometimes a shorter equalizer cable — and swapping them changes how evenly the carriages travel. If you install a rear-length cable up front, the lift may still run, but it’ll rack unevenly and one side will hit full height before the other, which stresses the entire structure over time.

Reeving pattern also affects the length you need. A single-wrap cable path calls for a shorter piece than a cable that wraps twice around a sheave for mechanical advantage, so counting wraps on the old cable before you order saves a return shipment. When we quote replacement sets for Rotary and Challenger lifts, we always ask which position the cable came from and count the wraps in the photo the customer sends us, because guessing here is the single most common reason parts get sent back.

Wire Lay and Construction Change Flex Life

Wire lay describes how the individual wires twist around the strands, and it’s a spec most people never think about until a cable fails early. Regular lay cables, where wire twist runs opposite the strand twist, resist kinking and are the standard for most automotive lift applications. Lang lay cables flex more smoothly around sheaves but can untwist under certain load conditions, so they’re less common in lift service unless the manufacturer specifies it directly.

Strand count and core type also belong in any real lift cable spec guide. A 7×19 construction, meaning seven strands of nineteen wires each, is common on lift cables because it offers a good balance of flexibility and strength for the constant bending these cables see every time the lift cycles. A wire rope core adds strength but less flex than a fiber core, which matters more on lifts that cycle heavily throughout the day, like a commercial shop running four or five vehicles through the same bay.

Swage Fittings and End Terminations

The swaged fitting on the end of a lift cable is engineered to the exact cable diameter and construction, and it’s not something you can improvise with a generic clamp. Button stops, ball ends, and threaded studs each interface with a specific part of the lift’s carriage or equalizer assembly, and using the wrong termination style means the cable simply won’t seat correctly even if the cable body itself is a perfect match. We see this most often when someone tries to reuse a fitting from an old cable on a new length of raw cable stock, which is not something we recommend for a load-bearing lift component.

Factory-swaged cables are pressed under controlled tonnage to a spec that keeps the fitting from slipping under rated load, and that’s not a process to reproduce with a bench vise. When we build replacement cables for older or discontinued lift models, we match both the cable spec and the termination style to the original, because a mismatched fitting is one of the fastest ways to turn a routine maintenance job into a warranty headache down the road.

Load Rating and Safety Factor

Every lift cable spec guide has to address the load rating, because the cable itself is rated well above the lift’s actual working load. A 9,000 lb two-post lift doesn’t use a 9,000 lb cable — the safety factor typically runs somewhere around design margins set by the manufacturer to account for wear, shock loading, and the fact that four cables share the total weight unevenly during a lift cycle. This is why swapping to a lower-rated cable to save a few dollars is never worth the risk, and why we only stock cables that meet or exceed OEM load ratings for each lift model we support.

Breaking strength numbers printed on a spec sheet describe a cable in new condition, not one that’s already seen a few years of UV exposure, grease, and flex cycles. That’s part of why we push routine cable inspection on every service call rather than waiting for a failure to force the issue, especially on lifts running near daily use in a commercial bay.

Matching Specs to Your Specific Lift Brand

Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all publish cable specs for their lift models, but the part numbers don’t cross-reference cleanly between brands even when two cables look nearly identical side by side.
