A lift commissioning checklist is the difference between a piece of equipment that’s merely bolted to the floor and one that’s actually ready to hold a vehicle over someone’s head. This isn’t paperwork for paperwork’s sake — it’s the last line of defense between a good install and a warranty claim, or worse, an injury. Why a Written Lift Commissioning Checklist Matters

Every lift manufacturer — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — publishes an installation and startup procedure, and every one of those procedures ends with a verification step. That step is where a lift commissioning checklist earns its keep. It forces the installer to slow down after the physically hard part is done and confirm the details that don’t show up just by looking at the equipment: torque values, fluid levels, alignment tolerances, and electrical continuity.

We’ve walked into shops where a lift looked finished — columns plumb, arms swinging freely, paint still shiny — but nobody had actually cycled it under a full rated load before customers started using it. A lift commissioning checklist catches that gap. It’s also the document an insurance adjuster or OSHA inspector will ask for if something ever goes wrong, so having it signed, dated, and filed protects the shop as much as it protects the technician standing under the vehicle. We keep a copy for our own records and give one to every customer at handover.

Anchoring and Concrete Verification

Before anything else, our lift commissioning checklist confirms the anchors themselves. We check anchor embedment depth against the manufacturer’s spec, torque every anchor bolt to the published value, and verify the concrete slab meets minimum thickness and cure-time requirements for the lift’s rated capacity. Undersized or under-cured concrete is the single most common reason a lift fails inspection down the road, and it’s completely invisible once the base plates are down.

We also check anchor spacing against nearby joints, cracks, or previous anchor holes from an old lift. A hole drilled too close to an expansion joint can look solid on install day and still pull loose a year later under repeated cycling. Part of this step includes a visual and tap-test inspection of the slab around each post, plus documentation of concrete age if it’s a newer pour. If anything is questionable, we flag it before moving forward rather than hoping it holds — that’s the whole point of running a checklist instead of trusting memory.

Hydraulic System and Fluid Checks

Hydraulic integrity is next on our lift commissioning checklist. We check for leaks at every fitting, hose, and cylinder seal, confirm fluid type and level match the manufacturer’s spec, and bleed air from the lines so the lift rises and lowers smoothly without chatter or hesitation. Air in the system is often mistaken for a bad cylinder when it’s really just an incomplete bleed procedure.

We also verify the hydraulic power unit’s relief valve is set correctly and that the lift doesn’t exceed its rated lifting speed. On two-post and four-post lifts, we cycle the unit empty several times, then under partial load, checking for even rise between posts. Uneven rise almost always traces back to either a hydraulic imbalance or a cable/chain sync issue, which is why these two systems get checked together rather than in isolation on every lift commissioning checklist we run.

Cable, Chain, and Locking Mechanism Inspection

For cable-synchronized two-post lifts, this section of the lift commissioning checklist covers cable tension, fraying, and equalizer function. We check that both sides of the lift reach full height within the manufacturer’s allowed tolerance and that the safety locks engage audibly and visibly at every locking position, not just the top. A lock that only catches intermittently is a lift that shouldn’t be in service.

Four-post and scissor lifts get a similar review of their chain or cable systems, plus a check of the mechanical safety latches that prevent the platform from dropping if hydraulic pressure is lost. We manually trip each safety lock during commissioning to confirm it holds weight without hydraulic assist. This step alone catches a surprising number of factory-fresh lifts with a lock that’s slightly misadjusted out of the crate — better to find that during commissioning than during a customer’s oil change.

Electrical and Control Panel Confirmation

Every lift commissioning checklist we use includes a full electrical review: correct voltage supply, proper grounding, motor rotation direction, and function of every control button including emergency stop. We confirm the lift is wired on a dedicated circuit sized to the manufacturer’s amperage requirement, since undersized wiring is a common cause of premature motor failure that shows up months after a rushed install.

We also test all interlocks and safety switches — including any door or gate sensors on inground and four-post lifts — to make sure the lift won’t operate with a safety circuit bypassed. Labeling matters here too: control panels should be clearly marked, and any posted capacity or operation signage should be legible and in place before commissioning is considered complete. It’s a small detail, but missing signage is one of the more common findings during a semi-annual lift inspection.

Full Load Test and Cycle Verification

No lift commissioning checklist is complete without a load test. We run the lift through a full cycle empty, then with a test vehicle at or near rated capacity, watching for smooth, synchronized movement at every stage of travel. We listen for unusual noise, watch for drift once the lift is stopped and locked, and confirm the arms or platform hold position without creeping down over several minutes.

This is also when we double-check arm restraints, adjust swing-arm locks, and confirm that adapters or blocks used for lifting points are rated for the vehicle being tested. A lift that passes the empty cycle but hasn’t been tested under real load hasn’t actually been commissioned — it’s just been installed. If you’re bringing a used lift back into service, this same load-test step is exactly what belongs in a lift startup checklist before the first vehicle goes up.

Documentation, Sign-Off, and Ongoing Inspection Schedule

The final section of our lift commissioning checklist is paperwork — but paperwork that matters. We document anchor torque values, fluid types used, load test results, and any adjustments made during commissioning, then have the shop owner or manager sign off that the lift was demonstrated and explained. That signed record becomes the baseline for every future inspection.

From there, we set the shop up with a recurring inspection schedule, since a lift commissioning checklist only covers day one — ongoing safety depends on regular follow-up.
