Good lift cylinder maintenance is the cheapest insurance you can buy on a vehicle lift, and it is the thing shops skip most often. The difference almost never comes down to brand or price. It comes down to whether anyone paid attention. Fluid Cleanliness Is 80 Percent of the Job
Almost every cylinder we tear down for seal failure has the same story written inside it: dirty fluid. Hydraulic oil is the working surface of the system as much as the steel is. When contaminated fluid moves past a rod seal at a couple thousand PSI, the grit acts like lapping compound. It cuts a groove in the seal lip, then it starts polishing and eventually scoring the rod itself. Once the rod is scored, no seal kit on earth will hold, because the seal has nothing smooth to ride against. That is why we tell shop owners the most important lift cylinder maintenance task has nothing to do with the cylinder — it is keeping the reservoir clean and covered.
Practically, that means checking the fluid level monthly with the lift fully lowered, not raised, so you get a real reading. Look at the fluid on a rag: it should be clear amber, not milky and not gray. Milky means water intrusion, common in unheated Iowa shops where a cold reservoir sweats all winter. Gray or black means metal and seal debris are circulating. Change the fluid every two to three years in a busy shop, use the viscosity the manufacturer calls for — usually an AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or ATF on some older units — and never top off from an open jug that has been sitting on a dusty shelf. A five dollar funnel with a screen catches more problems than any inspection checklist.
Rod Care: The Two Minutes Nobody Spends
The exposed chrome rod is the only part of the cylinder you can actually see and touch, and it tells you everything. When a lift lowers, the rod pulls whatever is sitting on it back through the wiper and into the seal pack. In a tire shop that is rubber dust and rim weight lead. In a truck bay it is road salt, and Iowa road salt is aggressive enough to pit chrome in a couple of winters. Pitting is not cosmetic. Each pit is a tiny channel for oil to escape and for grit to enter, and pits are what turn a simple reseal into a full cylinder replacement.
So we wipe rods. On four-post and scissor lifts where the cylinder sits under the platform, that means raising the lift, setting it on its mechanical locks, and running a clean rag along the exposed chrome. On two-post lifts with cylinders inside the columns, you can still get at the rod end and the gland area. If you are in a salt-heavy environment, a light film of clean hydraulic oil or a spray of corrosion inhibitor on the rod before winter goes a long way. Do not use grease — it holds dirt against the rod and does more harm than good. This is the single highest-return item in any lift cylinder maintenance routine, and it takes less time than filling out the paperwork about it.
Reading a Leak Before It Becomes a Failure
Not all leaks mean the same thing, and knowing the difference saves money. A light oil sheen on a rod that has been cycling all day is normal weepage — the seal is designed to leave a microscopic film so it lubricates itself. A drip that forms and falls once every few cycles is a rod seal starting to go, and you have weeks or months, not hours. Oil running down the outside of the barrel from a port fitting is not a seal issue at all; it is usually a loose JIC fitting or a failed O-ring, and it tightens or swaps in ten minutes.
The leak that matters most is internal, and you never see it. If a lift creeps down slowly with a vehicle on it while the power unit is off, and the hoses and check valve test clean, the piston seal is bypassing — fluid is sliding from the pressure side to the return side inside the barrel. That lift comes out of service until it is fixed, full stop. Bench-test the difference by isolating the cylinder: raise, shut down, close the manual lowering valve, and watch for movement over fifteen minutes with a load. Air, Bleeding, and Why Your Lift Shudders
A cylinder full of air behaves like a bad cylinder. Air compresses, oil does not, so a lift with trapped air rises in stutters, shudders under load, and often refuses to reach full height. Shops chase this for days assuming the pump is weak or the seals are shot, when the real fix is a proper bleed. Any time you open a hose, replace a cylinder, or run the reservoir low enough to suck air, you have introduced air that has to come back out.
The procedure is simple and it is part of routine lift cylinder maintenance after any service work: fill the reservoir, cycle the lift to full height five or six times without a load, then lower fully and top off. On two-post lifts with equalization cables, cycling also re-tensions the system and lets you confirm both carriages are tracking level. On four-post units, bleed the slave cylinders at their highest point per the manufacturer’s sequence. If you still get shudder after several clean cycles, look at the reservoir level again — an intake screen that goes uncovered at full extension will pull air on every single lift, forever, until someone adds oil. Mounts, Pins, and Side Loading
Cylinders are designed to push straight. Anything that pushes them sideways shortens their life dramatically, and side loading is the hidden cause behind a lot of premature failures we get called out on. Worn clevis pins, egg-shaped mount holes, loose base bolts, or a bent lift arm all put the rod into a slight angle. That angle concentrates all the load on one side of the rod bushing and one edge of the seal, and you get a leak on the same clock face every time — a diagnostic clue worth noticing.
When we inspect a lift, we check pins for wear and rotation, look for elongated pin bores, confirm mount hardware is at spec torque, and sight down the cylinder to verify it is square through its stroke. On scissor and mid-rise lifts, worn pivot bushings anywhere in the linkage transfer misalignment straight into the cylinder. Reseal or Replace: How We Decide
This is the question we field most, and the answer comes down to the rod and the bore, not the seals. Pull the gland and inspect. If the rod chrome is smooth with no pits you can catch a fingernail in, and the bore honing pattern is still visible with no scoring, a seal kit is the right call and it is a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder. If the rod is pitted, scored, or bent, or the bore is gouged, replace the cylinder — a reseal on damaged steel will leak again within months and you will pay for the labor twice.
Age and availability factor in too. On a twenty-year-old lift where the cylinder has already been resealed once, we usually recommend replacement so you reset the clock on the whole assembly. On current-production Rotary and Challenger units, seal kits are readily available and resealing is straightforward. Building a Schedule Your Shop Will Actually Follow
The best maintenance plan is the one that survives a busy Monday. We keep it to three tiers. Weekly, thirty seconds: look under the lift for fresh oil on the floor, and listen for changes in how the power unit sounds under load. Monthly, five minutes: check fluid level with the lift down, wipe the exposed rod, verify hose fittings are dry, and cycle the lift full stroke once to confirm smooth travel and locks that engage evenly.
Annually, in conjunction with your ALI-certified inspection: pull the reservoir cap and evaluate fluid condition, inspect pins and mount hardware, check anchor bolt torque, and document rod condition so you have a baseline to compare against next year.
