Before you spend money on a rebuild kit, run through this checklist first — it’ll save you a return shipment and a weekend spent waiting on the right parts.

Check One: Confirm the Leak Is Actually a Seal Problem
Before you buy anything, verify the leak is coming from the seals and not from a cracked cylinder body, a bad hose fitting, or a valve issue upstream. We get calls from CV axle and half-shaft jobs gone sideways where someone swapped seals, reassembled everything, and the lift was still leaking afterward — and it turned out the leak was never the seal, it was a hairline crack in the cylinder wall or a loose fitting at the base. Wipe the entire cylinder down, run the lift through a full cycle, and watch where fluid actually appears first.
If fluid is weeping from around the rod near the top of the cylinder, that’s almost always a rod seal or wiper seal issue and a lift cylinder seal kit will likely fix it. If you see fluid at a fitting, around a weld seam, or pooling from a spot that isn’t near a seal groove, you’re looking at a different repair entirely, and no amount of new seals will stop that leak. This five-minute diagnostic step is the single most common thing home mechanics skip, and it’s why some rebuilds don’t actually fix the problem.
Check Two: Get Exact Bore and Rod Measurements, Not Just the Model Name
Model numbers are a starting point, not a guarantee. Two cylinders that look nearly identical and share a similar model designation can use different bore diameters, rod diameters, or groove widths depending on the production year or a running production change. Before you order a lift cylinder seal kit, measure the bore diameter, the rod diameter, and the overall cylinder length yourself with a set of calipers if you can safely disassemble that far, or read them straight off the cylinder’s stamped tag if it’s still legible.
We’ve had guys call in wanting a kit for what they thought was a straightforward skid loader or implement-style lift cylinder, only to find out mid-order that there were two very close but not identical part numbers for that exact application, and ordering the wrong one meant a return and a delay. Take a photo of the end cap, the stamped tag, and a tape measure against the rod and bore if you’re not sure — we can usually confirm the right kit from those photos faster than trying to match it by model name alone over the phone.
A seal kit only works if the surface it’s sealing against is still in good shape. Before buying a kit, pull the rod out as far as you safely can and inspect the exposed portion for scoring, pitting, or corrosion. If you see visible grooves running lengthwise down the rod, or rust pitting inside the visible bore area, new seals will ride right over that damage and start leaking again within days or weeks — sometimes before you’ve even finished the CV axle job you pulled the lift down for in the first place.
This is the step that separates a successful DIY rebuild from a frustrating repeat failure. If the bore and rod look clean and smooth under a flashlight, you’re a great candidate for a straightforward seal kit rebuild. If they don’t, you’re better off either having the cylinder honed and resleeved by a shop that does that work, or replacing the cylinder outright — trying to seal a damaged bore with fresh seals almost never holds for long, and you’ll be right back where you started.
