Lift equalization systems are the quiet workhorses that keep a two-post or scissor lift level while it’s carrying a couple tons of vehicle eight feet off the shop floor. Most technicians never think about them until one side of the lift starts riding a little high or a little low — and by then, the equalization system is usually already asking for attention. What Lift Equalization Systems Actually Do

On a two-post lift, each column runs independently unless something ties them together mechanically. That’s the job of lift equalization systems — a network of steel cables or hydraulic lines that force both carriages to rise and fall at the same rate. Without that connection, one side could climb faster than the other, tilting the vehicle and putting uneven stress on the arms, the carriages, and the columns themselves.

Most asymmetric and symmetric two-post lifts use cable-based lift equalization systems, where a cable runs from one carriage, over a sheave at the top of the column, across to the other column, and back down. Some heavier-duty and inground models use hydraulic equalization instead, balancing pressure between cylinders rather than relying on cable tension. Either way, the goal is identical: keep both sides of the lift moving together so the vehicle stays level from the moment it leaves the ground until it’s fully raised. When we walk into a shop for a service call, checking the equalization system is one of the first things we look at, because it tells us a lot about the overall health of the lift.

Cable-Based vs. Hydraulic Equalization

Cable-driven lift equalization systems are by far the most common setup we see in Iowa shops, largely because Rotary and Challenger both build reliable, field-proven cable systems into their two-post lines. These systems use aircraft-grade cable rated well beyond the lift’s working capacity, but cables still stretch over time and years of cycling. That stretch is normal — it’s why adjustment is part of routine maintenance rather than a sign something’s broken.

Hydraulic equalization shows up more on four-post and inground lifts, where synchronized cylinders or a shared hydraulic circuit keep the platforms level. These systems trade cable stretch for a different maintenance concern — internal leaks or air in the lines can throw off timing between cylinders just as easily as a stretched cable can throw off a two-post lift. Whichever type your shop runs, the underlying principle in lift equalization systems is the same: mechanical or hydraulic coordination has to compensate for the fact that two independent lifting points rarely behave identically under load, especially as the equipment ages.

Warning Signs Your Equalization System Needs Attention

The most obvious symptom is a visibly uneven lift — one side sitting higher than the other when the vehicle is raised, or the platform arriving unlevel partway through a lift cycle. But there are subtler signs worth catching earlier. Listen for a clicking or grinding noise near the top of the columns, which often means a cable is riding rough over its sheave. Watch for one arm swinging out slightly slower than its counterpart during raise or lower cycles.

We also tell shop owners to pay attention to how the lift feels under load versus empty. A lift equalization system that’s fine with no vehicle on it can still show slack or lag once a few thousand pounds are riding on the arms. If you notice the platform settle unevenly right after reaching full height, that’s a sign the cables or hydraulic timing need adjustment before the next inspection. Catching these signs early is far cheaper than dealing with a lift that’s failed a safety inspection or, worse, dropped a vehicle unevenly during use.

Why Regular Adjustment Matters

Cable stretch is gradual and cumulative, which is exactly why it sneaks up on busy shops. A lift that was perfectly level six months ago can develop a noticeable lean without anyone touching it, simply from normal cycling. Left unadjusted, a stretched or slack cable puts extra load on the opposite side’s components, accelerating wear on carriages, rollers, and the columns themselves. It also increases the odds of a vehicle rocking or shifting position while it’s raised, which is a real hazard for anyone working underneath. Lift equalization systems are engineered with margin, but that margin shrinks every month adjustment gets skipped. A quick tension check during a routine PM visit is inexpensive insurance against a much bigger repair — or a much bigger liability — down the road.

When Cables Need Replacement, Not Just Adjustment

Adjustment only goes so far. Once a cable in a lift equalization system shows fraying, broken strands, or has been re-tensioned to its limit, it needs to be replaced rather than tightened again. Two-post lifts get most of the attention when people talk about lift equalization systems, but scissor lifts and mid-rise lifts have their own version of the same challenge. These platforms rely on synchronized hydraulic cylinders or mechanical linkages to keep both sides rising evenly, and the failure modes look similar — an uneven platform, a lag on one side, unusual noise during cycling.
