We’ve shown up to jobs across Iowa where the customer already had a lift picked out, sometimes already purchased, only to find the concrete was too thin or the ceiling was six inches short. A proper site survey catches those problems on paper instead of on install day, when it’s far more expensive to fix. Why a Site Survey Comes Before the Lift Purchase

The biggest mistake we see is buying the lift first and surveying the site second. A lift installation site survey checklist exists precisely to flip that order. We want to know your slab thickness, ceiling clearance, door heights, and electrical capacity before you commit to a specific model, because those numbers narrow down what will actually fit and function in your space. A two-post lift that’s perfect for a dealership bay might be structurally impossible in a converted pole barn with a thin floor.

Skipping this step doesn’t just risk a bad fit, it risks safety. Lifts anchor into concrete, and if that concrete can’t take the load, no amount of careful installation makes it safe. We’ve had customers call us after another company installed a lift with no survey at all, and the anchors were pulling loose within a year. Running the checklist first means the lift you choose is the lift your building can actually support, not the one that looked good online.

Concrete Thickness and Condition

Concrete is the first thing on any lift installation site survey checklist, and for good reason. Most two-post and four-post lifts need a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete, though many manufacturers call for more depending on capacity. We’re not just measuring thickness either — we’re looking at cracks, previous patch jobs, rebar placement if it’s known, and how old the pour is. A slab that looks solid on the surface can still be compromised underneath from years of freeze-thaw cycles, which is a real factor in Iowa winters.

We also test with a core sample or existing engineering documents when they’re available, and we always check for radiant heat lines or plumbing that anchors could hit. If your concrete doesn’t meet spec, that doesn’t necessarily kill the project — sometimes a smaller lift capacity works, sometimes a new pad needs poured in the install area. Either way, this part of the checklist has to happen before anchors ever go in the ground, and it’s one of the first things our crew documents on any survey visit.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

Ceiling height trips up more customers than almost anything else on the lift installation site survey checklist. Two-post lifts need enough overhead room for the vehicle to clear the top of the lift arms and the vehicle’s own height combined, and four-post lifts need clearance for the platform plus the tallest vehicle you plan to service. We measure to the lowest point in the bay, not just the average ceiling — that means accounting for HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, light fixtures, and support beams that might hang lower than the rest of the roofline.

We’ve had shops assume they had ten feet of clearance because that’s what the building plans said, only to find a duct system dropped the usable height to under nine feet in the exact spot they wanted the lift. This matters even more if you’re planning to lift raised trucks or vans with roof racks. Getting this measurement wrong means either returning a lift or cutting into your ceiling structure, both of which cost more than doing the survey correctly the first time.

Electrical and Power Requirements

Most hydraulic lifts need dedicated electrical service, and the site survey checklist has to confirm your panel can handle it without overloading the rest of the shop. We check voltage, amperage, and whether you need single-phase or three-phase power depending on the lift model. A lot of older Iowa shop buildings were wired decades ago for basic lighting and small tools, not for the draw a commercial-grade lift power unit requires.

We also look at where the power unit will sit relative to the lift itself, since run length affects wiring size and can influence total installation cost. If your panel is maxed out, we’ll flag that early so you can loop in an electrician before install day instead of discovering it when our crew arrives and can’t safely energize the unit. This is one of the checklist items that’s easy to overlook because it’s not visible the way concrete or ceiling height is, but it stops a project just as fast.

Bay Layout and Vehicle Clearance

A full lift installation site survey checklist also covers how the lift fits into your actual workflow, not just whether it physically fits in the space. We measure door width and height for vehicle entry, aisle space for driving in and out, and clearance to walls, columns, and neighboring bays. A lift positioned too close to a support column might meet code on paper but make it nearly impossible to open doors or roll a creeper around the vehicle once it’s up.

For shops running multiple bays, we also think about how one lift’s footprint affects traffic flow for the bays next to it, especially with four-post or scissor lifts that have longer runways. If you plan to add a second lift down the road, we account for that spacing now so you’re not boxed in later. Getting the layout right during the survey saves you from a lift that technically works but makes every job on that vehicle slower and more frustrating than it should be.

Drainage, Lighting, and Environmental Factors

Environmental conditions belong on the checklist too, even though they get overlooked more than structural items. We check for drainage near the lift area, especially in shops that deal with snow melt and road salt tracked in during Iowa winters — standing water near anchor points accelerates corrosion. Lighting matters as well, since techs working under a raised vehicle need enough overhead and task lighting to work safely, and we note where fixtures may need to be added or relocated.

We also factor in ambient temperature swings for unheated or partially heated shops, since hydraulic fluid and seals behave differently in cold conditions, and dust or debris exposure for shops near unpaved lots. None of these factors are dealbreakers on their own, but they inform which lift accessories, maintenance schedule, and even lift model we recommend. A thorough site survey checklist treats the whole environment, not just the four measurements everyone thinks of first.

Documentation and What Happens After the Survey
