We’ve walked into more than one bay where the customer bought a lift online, got it delivered, and only then called an electrician to ask what it needed. Voltage: 110V, 208-230V, and What Actually Runs What

Most single-post home lifts and light-duty scissor lifts run on standard 110V household power, but almost every 2-post and 4-post lift built for real shop use runs on 208-230V single phase or three phase. Lift motor electrical requirements at this voltage level mean you can’t just plug into a garage wall outlet and expect the unit to lift a vehicle reliably. We’ve seen homeowners try to run a commercial-grade lift off an extension cord to a 110V circuit, and the motor either trips the breaker constantly or burns out within months from being starved of power under load.

Before you order a lift, check the motor’s nameplate voltage against what’s actually available at the install location. A lot of older Iowa shop buildings were wired decades ago for lighter equipment, and adding a 230V lift motor means running new conductors from the panel, not just swapping a breaker. This is one of the most common surprises we run into during installs — the customer assumed the existing outlet would work because it looked similar, but the lift motor electrical requirements called for a dedicated circuit at a different voltage entirely. It’s worth a five-minute panel check before you buy, not after.

Single Phase vs Three Phase: Why It Matters for Your Lift

Single phase power is standard in nearly every residential and small commercial Iowa building, while three phase is common in larger shops, dealerships, and industrial buildings. Lift motor electrical requirements differ significantly between the two, and buying the wrong version of a lift motor for your building’s service is a mistake that costs real money to fix after delivery. Three phase motors run more efficiently and handle heavier duty cycles better, which is why a lot of heavy-duty commercial and 40K+ capacity lifts are built around three phase as the default or only option.

If your building only has single phase service, you have options: buy a lift built for single phase from the factory, or add a phase converter to run a three phase motor off single phase power. Converters work, but they add cost and another point of failure to maintain. We walk through this with every commercial customer before ordering because swapping a motor after delivery because of a phase mismatch is avoidable with one phone call. Knowing your building’s service type is step one in nailing down lift motor electrical requirements correctly.

Amperage, Breaker Sizing, and Dedicated Circuits

Every lift motor has a rated amperage draw, and that number determines what size breaker and wire gauge the circuit needs. Undersized wiring or a breaker that’s too small will cause nuisance trips every time the lift is loaded with a heavy vehicle, and a breaker that’s oversized for the wire is a fire hazard waiting to happen. Lift motor electrical requirements always specify a maximum breaker size on the motor’s data plate or in the owner’s manual, and that number should never be treated as a suggestion.

We always recommend a dedicated circuit for the lift motor rather than sharing a circuit with air compressors, welders, or shop lighting. Lifts draw the heaviest current during the initial lift cycle when the motor starts under full load, and sharing that circuit with other equipment invites trips at the worst possible moment — usually with a vehicle halfway up. A licensed electrician sizing the circuit correctly the first time is cheaper than troubleshooting mystery trips for the next five years.

Contactors, Overload Protection, and Motor Longevity

The motor itself is only part of the electrical picture. Contactors, overload relays, and disconnect switches all play a role in protecting the motor from damage and protecting the operator from a lift that won’t stop when it should. We regularly replace failed contactors on lifts that are otherwise in great mechanical shape, and in most cases the failure traces back to a motor that was working harder than it should have because of undersized wiring or voltage drop from a long circuit run.

If your shop building is large or the lift is installed far from the electrical panel, voltage drop over distance becomes a real factor in lift motor electrical requirements. A motor rated for 230V that’s only getting 210V at the far end of a long run will run hotter, draw more current, and wear out sooner. This is a case where an electrician needs to account for actual run length, not just circuit rating on paper, when sizing wire gauge for the install.

New Construction vs Retrofitting an Existing Building

New shop construction is the easiest scenario because you can design the electrical service around the lift equipment you plan to install, sizing the panel and circuits from day one. Retrofitting an older Iowa building is a different story — we’ve done installs where the existing panel was already at capacity, and adding a new 230V circuit for a lift motor meant either a subpanel or a full service upgrade before the lift could even be installed.

It’s worth having this conversation with an electrician and your lift supplier at the same time, before equipment is ordered. We regularly coordinate with electricians on commercial installs specifically because lift motor electrical requirements can change the whole scope of a project once a panel’s actual capacity is checked. Catching this early is far cheaper than discovering it after a lift is already sitting crated in your bay.

Single-Post and Home Garage Lifts: Different Rules Apply

Not every lift needs 230V three phase service. Home garage lifts and lighter-duty scissor and mid-rise lifts are often designed to run on standard 110V or 208-230V single phase circuits that a residential electrician can install without much drama. If you’re outfitting a home garage rather than a commercial shop, lift motor electrical requirements are usually much simpler, and BendPak and Atlas home lift lines are built with that residential reality in mind.

Even so, don’t assume a home lift’s motor will run fine on a shared circuit with a garage door opener and a chest freezer. Dedicated circuits matter at every capacity level, and checking the nameplate before you buy is the same rule whether you’re installing a 6,000 lb home lift or a 20,000 lb commercial unit.
