If one carriage on your two-post is riding an inch or two higher than the other, a lift not level equalizer cable adjustment is almost always the first thing we check when we roll up to a shop. The good news is that most of the time this is a thirty-minute fix with a wrench, a tape measure, and a little patience. The bad news is that plenty of shops keep cranking on the adjuster nuts until they run out of thread, which tells us the real problem was never cable tension at all. Here is how we sort out which one you are dealing with.

What the equalizer cables actually do
On a typical two-post lift, the two carriages are tied together by a pair of crossed cables that run from the bottom of one carriage, up over a sheave at the top of that column, across the overhead beam, down the opposite column, and terminate at the base or the opposite carriage. They are not lifting cables. The hydraulic cylinder or cylinders do the lifting. The equalizer cables exist to keep both sides climbing at the same rate, which matters because the two cylinders on a dual-cylinder lift will never be perfectly matched in displacement, seal drag, or internal bypass.
Once you understand that, the diagnostic logic gets simpler. If the cables are doing their job, the carriages stay within a fraction of an inch of each other through the whole travel. If one side leads at the bottom and the gap grows as you go up, tension is off or a cable has stretched. If the gap is constant at every height, you may be looking at a shim or mounting issue instead. Diagnosing the pattern before you touch a nut
Here is the sequence we use. Empty the lift completely, then lower it to the floor and confirm both carriages are fully down and both locks are disengaged. Measure from the shop floor to the same reference point on each carriage, usually the top of the arm pivot pin or a machined shoulder on the carriage weldment. Write both numbers down. Now raise the lift about a foot and measure again. Then take it to roughly chest height and measure a third time.
Three data points tell you the story. A gap that starts at zero and grows with height is textbook cable stretch or uneven tension, and that is exactly what adjustment is for. A gap that is identical at all three heights usually means a column is not plumb, a base plate is sitting on an uneven slab, or someone shimmed one column and not the other. A gap that appears and then closes back up points to a sticking slide block, a dry carriage, or a sheave that is not turning freely. We have found bird nests, shop rags, and one memorable wasp nest jammed in overhead sheaves at rural Iowa shops. None of those get fixed by turning an adjuster nut, and forcing tension into a bound cable just accelerates wear on the strands.
Performing the lift not level equalizer cable adjustment
With the lift fully lowered and unloaded, locate the adjuster ends. Depending on the brand and vintage, they sit at the base of each column, at the top of the carriage, or under the drive-over covers in the floor trough. On most Rotary and Challenger two-posts you will find a threaded stud with a jam nut and a nylock. Clean the threads, hit them with penetrating oil, and back the jam nut off before you turn the adjuster.
Tighten the cable on the low side, or loosen the high side, in small increments. We work in quarter-turn steps and cycle the lift after every adjustment. That cycling is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters, because cable seats and sheaves need to redistribute load before your measurement means anything. Raise the lift to working height, lower it fully, and re-measure. Repeat until both carriages are within roughly an eighth of an inch across the full travel. Then snug the jam nuts and verify the lock latches on both columns engage in the same slot at the same time. If they do not, you are not done. How much thread is left tells you the truth
The single best indicator of whether you should adjust or replace is how much adjuster thread you have consumed. Cables stretch over their service life. That is normal and expected, and the adjusters are there to take up that stretch. But once you are down to the last few threads, you have used up the design margin, and any further lift not level equalizer cable adjustment is borrowed time.
We tell customers to treat running out of thread as a hard replacement trigger, not a suggestion. A cable that has stretched that far has almost certainly begun to lose internal strand integrity, and the failure mode is not graceful. Also inspect for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, corrosion bloom, and any section where the cable has been rubbing on a sheave flange or the column edge. Any one of those means the cable comes out regardless of how the measurements look. What we see cause uneven carriages besides cables
Not every level complaint is a cable complaint. Air trapped in the hydraulic system will make a dual-cylinder lift wander badly, especially after a cylinder or hose replacement. On lifts with a single cylinder and a chain-over-sheave arrangement, chain wear plays the same role cables do, and the adjustment procedure looks different. On some three-stage cylinder designs, internal bypass in one cylinder causes a drift you will never chase out with cables.
Slab condition is the sleeper cause in older Iowa buildings. A four-inch pour that has settled unevenly, or an anchor set into a cracked section, lets one column lean under load. We check anchor torque and column plumb on every service call for exactly this reason, and we have condemned more than a few installations that were never anchored to spec in the first place. Sticking slide blocks or nylon glides that have worn to different thicknesses on each side create a similar symptom. Dry, unlubricated carriage channels are extremely common in shops that only grease what they can see. If you have gone through the measurement routine and the pattern does not match cable stretch, stop adjusting and start looking at these.
Safety rules we will not bend on
Nobody should be under a lift during any of this. Nobody should have a vehicle on it either. Equalizer cable work is done empty, on the floor, with the power disconnected when you are working near the top of a column. If you need to be at overhead height to inspect a sheave, use a proper ladder or lift platform, not the carriage arms.
We also insist on a load test after any cable work. Put a vehicle on it, run it to working height, set the locks, and verify both latches caught in the same position. Then check level again with the load on. A lift that measures perfect empty and drifts under weight is telling you something the empty measurement could not. If a cable snaps during your adjustment attempt, stop and call us. Do not run the lift on one intact equalizer cable, even for one more vehicle, because the remaining cable was never sized to control both carriages alone. If you can measure, cycle the lift, and turn a wrench in quarter-turns, you can do this. Where we earn our keep is the cases that do not resolve, and those are more common than you might think.
