A good lift parts identification guide saves you two things that matter more than the price of the part itself: downtime and return shipping. We field calls every week from shops in Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota that need a cable, a carriage slider, a lock dog, or a cylinder seal kit, and almost none of those callers know the serial number of the lift they are standing under. That is normal. Data plates fade, they get painted over during a shop remodel, or the lift came with the building when the current owner bought it fifteen years ago. Start With the Data Plate — Then Assume It Is Wrong

Every lift built for the North American market left the factory with a data plate. On a two-post it is usually riveted to the powerside column at roughly eye level, sometimes on the inside face where it stays cleaner. On a four-post you will find it on the powerside column near the power unit mount, or occasionally on the crossbeam. That plate carries the model number, the serial number, the capacity, and often a build date. Photograph it straight on with good light, then photograph it again at an angle so raised or stamped characters catch a shadow. Those two shots frequently reveal digits that a single flat photo washes out.

Here is the caution we always give: the plate tells you what the lift was, not necessarily what is bolted to it now. We have serviced plenty of lifts where a previous owner swapped in a different power unit, replaced the carriages, or fitted arms off a similar model because that was what the local supplier had on the shelf. So treat the plate as your starting hypothesis, not a verdict. Casting Marks, Stampings, and the Numbers Nobody Photographs

When the data plate is gone, the lift still identifies itself — you just have to know where it whispers. Power units carry a motor tag with voltage, phase, and horsepower plus a separate pump identifier. Sheaves and cable anchors sometimes have foundry marks cast into them. Clean the area first. We tell customers to spend five minutes with a rag and degreaser before shooting photos, because a legible stamping is worth more than an hour on the phone guessing. Write down every alphanumeric string you find, even the ones that look like inventory tags or inspection stamps, and note where each one came from. Context matters — a number on the cylinder means something different than a number on the column. Measure Like You Are Going to Be Quizzed on It

Measurements are how we identify parts when every number on the lift is unreadable, and they are the single most useful thing a customer can hand us. For cables: overall length from anchor point to anchor point, cable diameter, and the style of both end fittings (threaded stud, button, wedge, loop). For cylinders: bore, rod diameter, stroke, retracted pin-to-pin length, and port thread size and location. For arms: pin diameter, pad type and diameter, and the number of extension stages. For lock components: pin diameter and the vertical spacing between lock positions on the ladder.

Use a tape and a caliper, not an estimate. A quarter-inch error on cable diameter puts you in a completely different part family, and a two-inch error on cylinder stroke means the lift will either bottom out or overtravel. Photograph the tape in place against the component so the reading is documented and verifiable. This is the step most people skip, and it is the step that eliminates almost every return we would otherwise process. Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak: Brand-Specific Shortcuts

Once you have narrowed the brand, identification gets substantially easier because each manufacturer has habits. Rotary lifts use model prefixes that encode configuration — SPO for symmetric two-post, SPOA for asymmetric, with a numeric capacity suffix — and Rotary has kept parts availability strong across decades of production, which means a legible model number usually leads straight to a current part number. Challenger uses its own family logic across the CL and E-series lines, and Challenger’s PKS heavy-duty equipment is well documented for commercial fleets. Where it gets interesting is brand-specific quirks: certain production runs changed carriage hardware mid-model-year, and some overhead assemblies differ between early and late builds of the same model number. Orphan and Discontinued Lifts: When the Brand Is Gone

A large share of the lifts still working in Midwest shops were built by companies that no longer exist, or that were absorbed into another manufacturer three ownership changes ago. We see them constantly in central Iowa — a two-post in a small-town repair shop that has been cycling since the Reagan administration, still solid, still safe, and completely unsupported by any current catalog. Those lifts are not automatically scrap. Cylinders can be resealed or replaced with a dimensional match. Cables get built to length with the correct fittings. Power units are largely interchangeable if voltage, phase, flow, and pressure line up.

What does not transfer is anything structural or safety-critical. We will not fabricate a lock dog or improvise a carriage on an unknown lift, because those components are engineered to a specific load path and a specific ANSI standard. When we hit that wall, we say so plainly and talk through whether repair or replacement makes better financial sense over the next ten years. Photos That Actually Get You the Right Part

We identify a lot of parts from photographs, and the difference between a useful photo set and a useless one is about four minutes of effort. Verify Before You Install, Not After

When the part arrives, do not put a wrench on it until you have checked it against the old one. Lay them side by side.
