Lift manufacturers revise designs constantly and rarely announce it. A two-post that carried the same model name for fifteen years might have gone through four different carriage designs, three cable routings, two power unit suppliers, and a change in lock ladder pitch. The model number alone tells us the family. The serial number tells us where in that family your specific lift falls — which production run, which revision, which parts book applies. Second, people hand us the ALI certification number or the hydraulic unit’s tag instead of the lift’s. The Parts That Almost Always Require a Serial

Some parts are generic enough that a model number gets you there. Many are not. Cables and equalizer assemblies are the worst offenders — length, end style, and swage diameter all shift by revision. Hydraulic cylinders are next: bore, stroke, port location, and rod end can all change while the model name stays the same.
