Why Lift PM and Inspection Gets Skipped
The honest answer is time and money. A busy shop doesn’t want to pull a bay out of rotation for an hour so someone can crawl under a lift with a flashlight and a checklist. We get it — every bay down is revenue walking out the door. But the shops that skip lift PM and inspection almost always pay more later, whether that’s an emergency service call, a failed cable that damages a customer’s vehicle, or a full lift replacement because corrosion or wear went unaddressed for years.
There’s also a knowledge gap. Plenty of techs can change oil and rotate tires all day but have never been trained on what a worn anchor bolt or a frayed cable strand actually looks like. That’s not a knock on them — it’s just not what they were hired to inspect. What a Real Inspection Covers
A proper lift PM and inspection walkthrough isn’t a five-minute glance. We check the cables or chains for fraying and even wear, the hydraulic lines and cylinders for leaks or seepage, the locking mechanisms to confirm they engage on every rung, and the anchor bolts for looseness or concrete cracking around the base. On two-post lifts we pay close attention to the arm restraints and the equalization cable, since that’s where a lot of failures start. On four-post and scissor lifts we’re checking roller wear, safety latches, and the condition of the runway welds.
We also look at things owners never think about: the condition of the concrete slab itself, whether the lift is still level side to side, and whether the control panel wiring has been chewed by rodents or exposed to years of oil buildup. How Often Should You Actually Do This
Most manufacturers recommend a documented lift PM and inspection at least annually, with a quicker visual check monthly or even weekly depending on how hard the lift gets used. A quick-lube bay running a two-post lift thirty times a day needs more frequent eyes on it than a hobbyist’s home garage lift used on weekends. We generally tell commercial shops in Iowa to plan on a full professional inspection once a year minimum, with an internal visual check by staff between visits — cables, obvious leaks, unusual noise during travel.
Insurance carriers and some state or municipal inspectors are also starting to ask for proof of maintenance schedules, especially for shops that get audited after an incident anywhere in the industry. Scissor and Mid-Rise Lifts Have Their Own Checklist

We’ve found scissor lifts get skipped in PM rotations simply because they’re lower profile and less intimidating looking than a two-post reaching toward the ceiling. But a scissor lift carrying a loaded vehicle at chest height with a worn lock mechanism is just as dangerous as any other configuration. Don’t let it fall through the cracks of your schedule.
Refurbished and Older Lifts Need Closer Attention
If your lift came used, refurbished, or has been sitting in a shop for fifteen-plus years, your lift PM and inspection cadence should tighten up, not loosen. Rubber components degrade with age even without heavy use. Hydraulic seals dry out. Steel that looked fine on install day can develop fatigue cracks nobody’s checked for since the Bush administration. The Slab Underneath Matters Too
We can’t say this enough: a lift is only as good as the concrete it’s anchored to. Cracked, thin, or improperly cured slabs cause anchor pull-out long before the lift mechanism itself fails. Every serious lift PM and inspection should include a look at the slab, not just the machine sitting on it.
