A two-post lift needs enough overhead clearance for the vehicle to reach full rise without the roof kissing a joist, duct, or sprinkler head. We’ve had customers order a lift, get it delivered, and then discover their panel can’t support it without an electrician visit and a permit. Call an electrician before the lift arrives, not after. Ask what amperage and phase the specific model requires, since Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts often have different draw than a BendPak or Atlas home unit. If your shop is in an older building, also check that your panel has open breaker slots, because adding a lift circuit to a maxed-out panel means an upgrade project you didn’t budget for. Getting power sorted early keeps your whole install timeline on track instead of stalling out with a lift sitting crated in your bay for weeks.

Match Lift Capacity to What You Actually Lift

Buying based on today’s fleet is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it’s a critical line on any lift purchase checklist. If you service half-ton trucks now but might pick up fleet work with 3/4-ton or 1-ton duallies next year, buying a 9,000 lb lift instead of a 12,000 lb lift will box you in fast. Capacity should be based on your heaviest realistic vehicle plus a safety margin, not your average customer.

Also think about where the weight sits. Trucks and vans with heavy rear axles or tool boxes change how arms need to be positioned, and some lower-capacity lifts simply aren’t built for that kind of leverage.
