Arm restraints do something different but related — they hold the swing arms under a vehicle’s lift points so the arms can’t kick out sideways once weight is on them. Next, raise the lift empty and listen for the cam clicking through each rung cleanly; skipped or double clicks usually mean the cam or the rack teeth are worn and need replacement, not adjustment.
For arm restraints, physically try to move each arm side to side once it’s positioned under a vehicle’s lift point, restraint engaged. There should be no lateral play. If there is, don’t put weight on it — the restraint pin, bushing, or bracket needs attention before that arm goes back in service. Retrofitting Older Lifts
A lot of the 2-post lifts still running in Iowa shops predate current cam and restraint designs, and retrofitting them is one of the most common jobs we do. If your shop runs a mixed fleet of 2-post, scissor, and mid-rise lifts, it’s worth standardizing your inspection checklist across all of them rather than treating each lift type separately.
